Paypal Warning?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Anyone else get this email?

Dear PayPal member,

PayPal would like to inform you about some important information
regarding your PayPal account. This account, which is associated with the
email address

<Big Si's email>

will be expiring within five business days. We apologize for any
inconvenience that this may cause, but this is occurring because all of our
customers are required to update their account settings with their
personal information.

We are taking these actions because we are implementing a new security
policy on our website to insure everyone's absolute privacy. To avoid
any interruption in PayPal services then you will need to run the
application that we have sent with this email (see attachment) and follow the
instructions. Please do not send your personal information through
email, as it will not be as secure.

IMPORTANT! If you do not update your information with our secure
application within the next five business days then we will be forced to
deactivate your account and you will not be able to use your PayPal account
any longer. It is strongly recommended that you take a few minutes out
of your busy day and complete this now.

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE VIA EMAIL! This mail is sent by an
automated message system and the reply will not be received.

Thank you for using PayPal.

This is what Paypal say when you Log In to their site:-

Protect Your PayPal Account

As you may know, fraudulent PayPal look-alike emails are being circulated to our customers and requesting personal information. These fraudulent emails address PayPal customers with the salutation "Dear PayPal User" or "Dear PayPal Member," and are NOT sent by PayPal.

Use the following tips to protect your PayPal account:
Never give out the following information in an email:

First name, last name, business name

Email and password combination

Credit card, bank account, and PIN number

Social security and driver's license number

Do not download attachments, software updates, or any application to your computer via a link you received in an email. PayPal will not ask you to download anything for your account to work.

Choose a unique password and change it every 30-60 days.
If you are ever uncertain about the validity of an email or application, go to the PayPal web site at https://www.paypal.com/ to check it out.

If you think you have received a fraudulent email, please forward the entire email to spoof@paypal.com and then delete it.

I had a similar email a few months ago and ignored it. I hope everyone does, or they could find they have an empty bank account. :x

Our virus page at work shows you what is in the file attached to this. Basically it throws up a form asking you for your Credit Card number, the security number on the back, expiry date, the next page asks for your address details and social security number etc etc.
If someone is dumb enough to send it in, you'd lose your whole identity!

All official Paypal emails will have your name in the Dear... bit of the letter NOT Dear Paypal User.

I've had two supposedly from EBay about how they would close my account unless I gave them all my info...luckily I had heard about this from a seller who'd had her identity stolen & (what really set me off) they couldn't spell for toffee.

Also the email was dated two years ago for some reason. But for these simple mistakes I might have fallen for it as I can be a bit dumb sometimes. So let's hope the scammers never take evening classes.

There's also a spam email from admin@(whatever your isp is) that says something about your email account details changing, and comes with a zip file. zip contains an .html that links to a trojan (virus).

Also beware emails from eBay asking you to login, give your details, etc...

So the e-mail I got looks like that (copy-paste):

Hmmm - all very suspect (although I might try the life savings one on my users!!!)

Any email that asks for personal details of whatnot should be deleted immediately. If you're using an older version of Outlook Express to read HTML email, don't even open it - you could be exposed to malicious scripting.

And whatever else you do, never ever reply to these emails. All you'll do is confirm to someone somewhere that your email address is valid, and then you can just watch your inbox filling with more junk.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

It just got a lot more interesting, thanks to the latest flaw in IE.

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5119440.html

Test it here.

Mozilla Firebird displays the true URL, while IE shows, surprise, the spoofed one.

ebay and Paypal scammers have got to love this one.

Where did you get your sig line? And you ought to know better than to be taken in by a wealthy Roman.

He promised me the known world he did.
I was to be taken to Rome, House by the Forum.

Pikkrong's Mum lives in Rome in a house by the Forum? That would be the Palatine Hill which means she's an Empress.
