What? How much more difficult is just clicking a link and it opening up in another window?Being645 wrote:isn't there a way we can embed YouTube vids within posts?

We're using this BB Code thingy at PD:
HTML replacement:
All you need to do is putting the video ID within the new youtube tag, like:
This is the YT URL:
The only effort is to explain how to read/understand that video ID thingy but I think it's not too geeky. At PD this youtube tag is the second popular bb code right after the quote tag.
Code: Select all
[Youtube]{TEXT}[/Youtube]
Code: Select all
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" style="width:480px; height:385px;" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/{TEXT}?rel=0&showsearch=0&hd=1">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{TEXT}?rel=0&showsearch=0&hd=1" />
</object><div style="font-size: 0.8em"></div>
This is the YT URL:
That's the ID within the tags:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egDJc1HhiZ4&p=876F9B5FDF112860&playnext=1&index=24
Code: Select all

Yeah, I've looked at that kind of plugin before but always ruled it out for two main reasons:
- excessive amounts of videos embedded in a page would slow the site and people's browsers down
- some people's security policies (at work for example) might not like content from YouTube and could cause heartland to get blocked for them, or could get them into trouble...
dunno. Is it something people would be interested in? Or are people happy just clicking links...?

What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
I can't say that this does relly slowdown the page rendering/overall performance - even if heavy used in a thread like "I'm just listen to..."
It may happen that the youtube servers have a performance issue every now and then but from my experiance this doesn't block or delay the remaining page elements from rendering/loading - so you'll get the phpBB content quick as usual plus some delay until the embedded objects from YT are getting displayed - that's basicly the worst case (at least with phpBB3 but I think that's not depending on the forum version).
Another possible issue is that YT might perform some major changes with the video URL/code structure some day that might lead to a problem that videos are disappearing from all posts without a solution to get them back. That would be lame but it's a.) probably not gonna happen for various reasons and b.) it can happen to other user-content (images..) as well.

Maybe - on the other hand, many newspages are using more or less embedded youtube content every now and then so it's not really a fancy feature these days.- some people's security policies (at work for example) might not like content from YouTube and could cause heartland to get blocked for them, or could get them into trouble...

But you still have to click on the embedded thingymawhatsit - that big triangle mularky in the middle. Because I'd CERTAINLY whinge it it came on automatically - sometimes I just don't wanna listen/see what you lot put upPista wrote: That's a whole other click.

Oooh, get her.
what bothers me about YT links on here is the poster not taking time to give you a clue of what you're clicking on, I tend to look and think "oh it's that nut, the link will be useless"

Barry's right. A lot of people log in at work (naughty naughty) and they could get in hot water.
My place has websense policing the server & embedded vids just don't display as it bans all streaming media.
But James has a point.
this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zPyvohbi-E
gives little clue as to the content & even though it's one of the best songs evvah, it's still pretty anonymous just posted without a hint as to the content.
even YCBTO would be helpful

I vote against. I have sound on my work computer permanently turned off after some f*ckwit (on another forum) thought it would be hilarious to embed a Rickroll vid in a post. When I clicked it autoplayed. Very loud.
As well, let's face it, enough people don't understand how to embed images and what-have-you in bbcode, I would get sick of explaining how to embed youchoob vids...

Who are you talking to? ...Quiff wrote: when you paste the YouTube URL you could always just write what it is too...
gives the clarity without ramming it down your throat.
of course, there's not much difference between pasting [YouTube] 8zPyvohbi-E [/YouTube] and see the title of the vid in the picture ...
or [URL =http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zPyvohbi-E] YCBTO [ /URL] and read it from the Clicky ...
However, the latter is just not an embedded vid leaving you the choice to click and start it or not,
but is a link that will start the vid without further ado .... and yeah, ramming it down loudly and deeply whereever ...
Ah, most people learn very fast, and we will surely not leave you all alone with their questions ... ...markfiend wrote: As well, let's face it, enough people don't understand how to embed images and what-have-you in bbcode, I would get sick of explaining how to embed youchoob vids...
OK, in that point, I entirely agree ... I had no idea, it was possible to set it on autoplay ... ... ...markfiend wrote: I vote against. and also, as a matter of fact, YouTube vids are often set to the highest possible pitch,
which I find is a rude disturbance in itself, even at home and with one's favourite song ever ... ...
However, I've never seen some autoplay happen in other forums ... and although I'm not so very familiar with programming,
or not at all to be honest, I guess, there is a way to preclude autoplay from the outset for the discerning rept... , errh, HL mod ... ...
But that takes extra clicking on the keyboard I will endeavour to type - '80's disco nonsense' 'glamrock tomfoolery' 'classic gem that you all should hear today' from now on, so people can still ignore the links I post but at least they'll KNOW what they've ignoredQuiff Boy wrote:when you paste the YouTube URL you could alway just write what it is too...

Here is the biggest argument against it. Click if embedded here, or click if redirected to another window to view. What are we saving?Debaser wrote:What? Another vote against it.
