Do the Sisters of Mercy allow taping / trading of shows?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I heard that the SOM allow taping and trading like the Grateful Dead did. Is this true?

they don't actively encourage it like GD did, but they know it happens, do nothing to stop it, and as long as communities like ours encourage the free distribution of those recordings, they don't seem to mind... :)

from their perspective it gets their newer songs to a wider audience, and the free aspect of it helps cut down on the profiteering of organised bootleggers

almost every sisters gig ever played has at least 1 recording of it in existence, especially gigs from the last 15-20 years  :notworthy:

I am not sure that Andrew would say it even if it was true.
I have recorded a lot of gigs myself and was caught once in Stockholm 1991 at a gig. I had a backstage pass and managed to get the local staff to take me backstage where their then securitymanager Ian Robertson helped me not getting kicked out of the venue.
My friend was however filming and when backstage he mentioned it (how he dared I do not know). Andrew didn´t mind though and guitarplayer Tim Bricheno even wanted to see the film at once. I met the band the day after and had a huge collection of vinylbootlegs which I wanted him to sign. Which he did. He looked long at some of the records, he even corrected some wrong titles on the cover. For example, on the Drogheda 1990 LP it says "Why You Won´t See Me". Andrew drew a line over the title and wrote the correct one.... He told me that even he collected liverecordings (!) and that I had some did not have and wanted me to tape them for him(!!!).

But they used to be one of the most bootleged band in the world in the early/mid 80:s and of course he knows that this helped the band to get as many followers and hardcore fans as they did.

And if it wasn´t for the live recordings they most certain wouldn´t still be touring. They would be long gone and forgotten.

definitely.

i've also had a few requests from various members of the sisters, both past & present, for copies of audio & video bootlegs over the last few years

Somebody slip 'em YCBTO!
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I think audio taping is no problem these days - I recall some (recent) interviews with andrew and it seems that he doesn't really bother anymore even if the whole band policy appears a bit schizophrenic.

Video taping is still a no go though.

I'm sure that Ben reposted a fan-filmed youtube clip of a song from a recent Sisters gig to his Facebook page within the past couple of months. Maybe he didn't get Von's memo, ;)

I think it's a kind of generation gap within the band how to handle these things^^

And Si said anyone could do Audio / Video for the March Violets gig in Leeds last November. :notworthy: :notworthy:

I stood right at the front doing both Audio / Video and nothing was said. :D

Q: Are you the “Stones of dark 1980s? Great records, a big back catalogue, but no new song for the last two decades…
AE: Always we record new material and our fans can hear it, via official site, or via various bootleg that they share. The Stones use to release new albums, that are all crap.
