Bridge Over Troubled Water was top of the hit parade when I was born.
The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

I got into Genesis backwards, which probably explains why I don't feel as much contempt for their post-Gabriel stuff as I might otherwise have done. While I still have a soft spot for later songs like Mama or Abacab, this stuff doesn't even begin to rank along with most of the earlier stuff. I'd say Follow You Follow Me was the start of the end as far as Genesis were concerned, and their last great album was Duke (although I'm sure a few here would disagree).
Gabriel's voice has an intensity that Collins' just doesn't, and he's one of my favourite lyricists ever (Supper's Ready, Battle of Epping Forest etc.). And he's written some really dark stuff that outgotths most goth music I've heard! I do think Collins capabilities as a musician / arranger are often greatly underestimated and unfairly dismissed, largely because of tendancy to boring lyrics. That said, I'm not too inspired by anything recent I've heard from either man.
