Once upon a time...
After being kicked out of Leeds Uni and out of my flat, I moved in with some dodgy characters named Aled, Dean and Birdy. (Those names may ring a bell with some Leeds folks I suspect.) Anyway, one day in mid '93 (I think) I bought a second-hand copy of "Natural History" (for about eight quid, from a comic shop of all places!) and Aled says to me, "wow, mad coincidence, Simon's coming over later."
It turned out that Simon was a pretty good mate of Aled's because at the time they both worked crewing for gigs at the Uni and Poly; Aled had this tale to tell about Simon.
It seems that Simon was still at Uni when the March Violets did their first tour, and he had a dissertation or long essay to hand in. Now this would be a bit difficult to do on the road, so he apparently paid one of his mates an ounce of weed to do the essay for him. Unfortunately for Si, the University authorities don't look too kindly on this sort of thing, and him and his mate were both kicked out.
Now I can't be sure of the veracity of this tale; Aled was a notorious bulls***ter; (the last I heard of him he'd disappeared with three grand of other people's money...) but it struck me as worth passing on.
Random Simon D anecdote.
