The Sisters Of Mercy + Crap Footage

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Comparing YouTube/amateur footage of recent Sisters' gigs with those of your beloved Nephs DeWinter reveals very little difference in quality, except that :von: can actually sing rather than just bellow like a buffalo or fake-croon like that old guy down your local pub who thinks he's Tony Bennett on karaoke night. As you said in an earlier post in this thread, it's the production values of Ceromonies that we need for a proper document of the modern Sisters. If someone was putting a documentary togther about the Girls for example, there would be precious little professional quality footage to use from the last twenty years - not the greatest of arguments to prove that the band have been evolving organically since day one rather than becoming a nostalgia act.

Hi all,

The point I was trying to make is that there is nothing on youtube, any television performances, proffesionally filmed live gigs, HD quality promo's or anything else for people to watch who are not "us".

All of those bootleg DVD's are for "us". They all come with the expectation that they are crap but that we can see the greatness behind the smoke, the mumbling lyrics etc, etc.

I could not recommend in good conscience anything out there except the original albums to someone who doesn't know anything about the Sisters.. it just all seems so rubbish.

look to the recent reissues of all the Mary Chain albums and you will see what I mean. Or there performance of Snakedriver on Jools Hollands TV show, in fantastic quality on youtube.

If you don't like them, think of almost any other band who put together "stuff" for public consumption.

It feels like the Sisters might as well never have existed in the first place to me and thats incredibly sad.

All previous attempts recording the gigs more or less professional-wise are outdated since there''s a.) not the recent line-up on the footage and b.) the stuff wasn't ecorded in HD. Andrew is quite a geek so I can't imagine an official release in SD quality is an option (besides some free online clips like susanne). IIRC there was a static mounted cam at the mixing desk plus the merch guy filming the gigs handheld out of security grave years ago - that's not really something you can use to create a professional live video with just 1,5 angles - I guess the initiel purpose of this was having a chance reviewing the gigs audio-visual wise (lightshow etc.). Anyway - the idea to use the stuff for some kind of competitive DVD release was doomed to failure.

But the main + less technical reasons why we can't expext a video release are probably closely related to the "why he's not gonna put out records anymore" arguments.

I'm not being entirely serious. I was just responding in kind to a fairly obvious attempt to tweak my proverbials.

Agree with most of your argument but not totally with the last bit. If the claim is that the Girls are and always have been primarily a live, gigging band (hence no studio recording), then a live DVD would seem to be a logical extension of that and would allow those who live in territories where they never tour the opportunity to see what they have been missing (a conclusion they might not necessarily arrive at from watching YouTube clips, even if some are of a reasonable standard). In the NZ radio interview, :von: told the interviewer that he didn't have to wait until there was a major anniversary tour to interview him, but the reality is that the media will ignore a band unless there is some new product of some kind to make the band current.

IIRC correctly, andrew was also talking about the bad internet/people downloading things anyway instead of buying (next no the evil record companies/poor profit sharings). I don't see much of a difference between DVD or CD releases when it comes to piracy issues. He also says that he's not really looking for opportunities giving interviews at all - the rare occasions are more or less "forced" by the tour manager, especially if they enter new territories.

I basicly get your thoughts and don't agree with all of andrews arguments or the fact the he shows no trace of interest moving on with the idea sharing at least a few more bits online for the fans every now and then like he did a decade ago with the susanne video/mp3. Well, maybe he tried but wasn't happy with the results - I can imagine he's quite demanding and not happy editing some rough live-soundtrack with his own vocals

All jokes aside - this is a serious limitation and hard to improve during mastering without major cheating efforts.

There's always a convenient reason for him to do sweet Francis Adams. Before the evil internet it was Adam Pearson refusing to let him release anything, and before that it was the record companies not wanting to pay him what he considered he was worth. Both McC and Hussey managed new albums and pretty snazzy DVD's, so he clearly could. I don't see why he always has to blame, if blame there is for him wanting to do what he feels like with his own life, someone or something else. I've always wondered if there isn't still some kind of legal snarl-up in the background preventing him.

This is not the first mention of it all being an on-going joke. I'm starting to believe it is some sick joke. :(

Agreed.

As for the splitting of royalties, there was no problem with the re-release of the studio albums from previous members, so I doubt there would be any with a DVD release.
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

Sometimes maintaining a running gag is better than releasing some music-wise-equivalent of "Duke Nukem Forever" :urff:

I'd say it's worth 9 additional pounds since most of us probably already owned different LP/CD versions

I think this price-range is reasonably and a good competition to filesharing.

Agreed. I bought one to keep in the car to make the morning commute more palatable. If it gets nicked (not that anyone would bother to steal CDs these days) it would hardly break the bank to buy a new one. It has the added bonus that people rarely ask for a lift twice ...

It's not really a lifetime's work, though, is it? It's barely even a decade's work.

Does legal snarl-up include selling the rights to everything apart from the reptile house (so he can keep the web/merch side of things) and why he had absolutely 0 input into the new releases

I've written it before, the DVD was mastered and ready to go, Chris S did it. It was gonna be sold direct off the web, but the live shows were so poor he couldn't get any uk gigs; no promoter would take the gamble and Chris S had left.

I don't think there is much good quality bootleg stuff out there on youtube, because the masters are sitting unloved in boxes and nobody cares enough to get them out.

It was Jessica who filmed every gig, 2001-2005 and some if I recall, in 2006

time for a nap now...
