is it worrying that they're having to go down the pledge route for only their second album?
i know many successful recording artists have used pledge (march violets, killing joke, ian mcculloch, ginger wildheart, to name but 4), but they have an existing canon of work and a large & loyal fan base to fall back on
not sure if doing this for a new band will be as successful... (while they're not exactly now, they're certainly not old compares with the 4 i mention above!)
if it were my (relatively) new band and i'd had to use the pledge route to fund recording of my 2nd album, i'd be having a crisis of confidence right now
it feels a bit desperate to me... weren't they tipped to be a(nother) 'next big thing'? has their 15 minutes of fame passed them by?

What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
Pledge (or similar sites) is a tool to go/be really independent. I guess that's qhy they trying to do this.
@Quiffy
Fair point, but I am seeing the Pledge route as just another way to make sales.
Almost "pre-orders" as it were.
Looking at what is constantly saying about the industry, I kind of don't mind paying the band for my goodies up front & hoping they'll actually see a few pennies for their efforts.
It also seems they are going exclusively through Pledge too

Like Bartek said. It's independence

yeah, independence & pre-orders i get. definitely. and i'm not averse to backing this kind of thing (be it pledge for music or kickstarter for other stuff), i just remember all the hype and expectancy around ulterior when their 1st album came out.
my impression is that if things had gone according to plan they wouldn't have had to go down the route of independence & pre-orders.
just seems weird to me.
maybe i've still got an old fashioned view of the recording industry after all
i wish them the best of luck, obviously. not really my cup of tea, but they made quite a nice noise on at least half their 1st album

I think you cracked it with the word "industry".Quiff Boy wrote:

All industries are a bit frakked these days & I guess folks are trying to take it into the own hands.
Seeing this pledge idea just echoes that IMO.
After all, the music industry doesn't appear to help many these days. At least not the ones that could prolly do with help.
Take The Sisters.
Their claim is that playing live is what pays the bills & not making records (via a label).
Whether that's an excuse for being a lazy sod or not is a different discussion, but it's pretty feasible.
Funding/ securing funds for your own project is also going to be a PITA though. I would guess that all the marketing work fall at your own doorstep & given how carp Ulterior's homepage is, they might have some problems.
Unless they rely solely on word of mouth & farcebook
Just listened to the teaser.
Sounding very good indeed

The only thing is that PledgeMusic for a starting band can turn out quite disastrous.
For old bands they can count on many old supporters and they will achieve their goal more easily.
Independence is also a claim I read; I don't know whether PledgeMusic is so 'independent', it's just old wine in new bags as far as I see it.
I think the best guess is: Ulterior are good, but no label is willing to pick them up, they are eager to release, but don't have the money to go to the presses themselves, so they have to use Pledge to sponsor them.
IZ.

Surely if they were that good they wouldn't have that problem.Izzy HaveMercy wrote:I think the best guess is: Ulterior are good, but no label is willing to pick them up...

I didn't take part in the pledge (I discovered them only a while ago and wasn't quite sure I like them enough) but I've seen them 2 days ago and they were fab. One of best gigs I've been to and I have high standards I'll definitely buy the new CD when it's released..
I see it all perfectly; there are two possible situations - one can either do this or that. My honest opinion and my friendly advice is this: do it or do not do it - you will regret both.

... arrived here well after Xmas packed in a cool all black air cushion envelope ... that alone looked very tempting already ... ...
I didn't listen to the download. Real CDs are just so much easier to handle. First listen was a shock of loud and crazy ...
Second listen convinced me that this not the kind of music to sit down with a beer at the bar wasting time in casual talk ... ...
Well done, ULTERIOR! ... ... ...
Very danceable ... ...
And also I'm pleased to note that you've grown out of some of your (admittedly cool) singing ideals,
incorporating various others into a very tempting match* ... ... * (if that should be the right expression)
Mine still hasn't arrived
The download's on the iprod, along with the bonus track Arabella, but I really want the shiny thing to appear in my mailbox.

That's typical for Xmas time. I'm also waiting for things I've purchased by auction on ebayPista wrote:Mine still hasn't arrived

- at the beginning of December ... delivery to the European continent takes very long this time of year ... *sigh ...
Bonus track? Hell, I should check that ... ...
Yes, an excellent bonus track, perhaps better than some songs of the main albumBeing645 wrote:That's typical for Xmas time. I'm also waiting for things I've purchased by auction on ebayPista wrote:Mine still hasn't arrived

They mention that it was written some time after the previous album recordings
