Whitby Gothic Style!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

@Sinnie: Like any kind of subculture/uniformed community. it's always sad when you look at it as 'outsider'.

It's always funny to watch any subculture with their habits, how them see themself in group, who is more true and who less and who is just poser, obviously according to them.

Oh, aye, but that's all based on opinion - which is, of course, entirely subjective.

Then again, it is half-witty, the editing and the camera work is rather good and I think it is taking the p*ss nicely with one of those idiot hypes that will dwindle in a couple of months.

Well done you guys... 5 minutes of fame is guaranteed! :)

Though I loathe the whole "Gangnam Style" thing (more like GAGnam, imho :urff:), and think it's imbecilic and irritating as hell, I'm frankly shocked at some of the responses in this thread to our Tim's vid. Really, the "gothier-than-thou" attitudes have put me right off - they're why I dropped out of the "scene" time and again in L.A. and Chicago, because I couldn't handle the arrogance and pretentiousness of what amounted to a bunch of petty wankers.

I'll never forget an evening years ago at an L.A. goth club, where everyone was engaged all night in a desperate attempt to out-goth one another. As the night drew to a close, the DJ suddenly slapped on Deee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart." I marveled at how effortlessly the whole catty, spiteful lot of 'em went from "Helter Skelter trotting" to furiously wiggling their black-clad booties. It totally made my night, and I realized then what a big fucking joke it all was.

Shall the Whitby folks who hammed it up for the video be required to relinquish their Goth Cards (tm) now? Good grief.
I'm not a GOth...I'm too old too care about what subcultures are doing. I just did n't like it.

There's no Goff, there's no Metal, there's no Pop.

There's only music, the rest is just Attitude and can be done away with after the expiry date. :)

Your guess is correct, i have had a nice education in music that included many interesting things and did some band things also for a period of 12-13 years
I will not ask you IZ. cause i am pretty sure that you do music for many years now, your words prove it :)

i'm not gothier than thou. i dont hate it because it's not goth (whatever that means)...

i dont really care about genres either, a good tune is a good tune. i used to get slaughtered in some goff clubs for playing boney m and dolly parton, but f**k 'em. the 1st wave goff clubs i used to go to used to play all that sort of stuff... we had a sense of humour.

what i do care about is that this was a sad, cheap (mentally, not interested in the financial side of how much it cost) and predictable attempt at a joke. it's symptomatic of a moribund community trying to prop to itself up by attaching itself to a bit of passing pop culture. in doing so it debases itself and the culture it's trying to appeal to. let alone how it looks to the outside world ("f**king idiots! what a s**t sense of humour!"

it's like that f*cking "gothic people" reworking of the pulp song. it's a really sad, witless and cheap "gag".

and what really f**ks me off about it is that it perpetuates and /or legitimises a really irritating song, which thanks to this i will probably be hearing as the last song of the night in dodgy goth clubs for the next year or so... :urff:

no offence tim, but i really dislike it. others don't, clearly, so fair play to you, but i really, really dislike watching what to me looks like a cheap attempt at hitching on to a bandwagon to get a bit of publicity for a scene which is already regarded as a bit of a laughing stock by the rest of the world.

but hey ho, i've already wasted too much mental energy hearing, looking and thinking about this. like anything else in the world, it's a brief fad. it will pass...

Just as I thought!

Musicians don't care much about style and attitude, maybe they do at first but they will drop that after a couple of years, or it has to be a significant part of your performance.

I make music myself, free from any genre... I like it that way. And Goths and Metalfans alike like my music, and those are the people I do it for :)

1. I'm probably older than you are, and I don't really give a rat's arse about the subcultures in question, either. The example I used in my initial post was a personal g*th club experience from 20 years ago.

b. I didn't like it, either. That's not the point, anyway.

pi. My comments weren't aimed at you.

Ah, but we don't live in a Utopia where everything and everyone isn't immediately judged and slapped with a facile and trivial label, regardless of how ignorant/disrespectful/way-off-the-mark/undeserved/hateful/degrading/demoralizing/downright stupid said label might be (and probably is).

Humans need to label everything, or they simply can't function. 'Twas ever thus, innit?

That's what I'd say to anyone offended. I'd also cite Von's First Law, but you already knew that.

But you are NOT a musician, right? Then it's OK to do that! happily enough, as a musician, I really don't care about labels and genres, it is convenient to catalogue my cd's and LP's tho.... and yet.... I find that VERY hard to do these days, catalogue by genre I mean, so I have a feeling lots of bands and artists are fed up with the genre-thinking and do as they damn well please, which I hope will rub off on the fans as well....

A good evolution in my eyes!
