Tony James on Von

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Well basically yes, and I can perfectly understand :von: in that DNA.

However, I think the reference to " Johnny or Kurt or Amy" is exaggerated ... well, wrong even.

Partly true, but the kind of DNA is variable to that of the artists mentioned.

Normally it's a game and we all (?) know it, but if it's act, and i was said by someone who knows A.E. and worked with him, then his stubbornness is twice much stupid.

I can't even try defend myself by saying i meant DNA.
But then his stubbornness is not stupid, it's just who he is. But how such intelligent person (judging by interviews [but i read in "Heartland", that it looks, seems, that he's acting, that he's always well prepared] onliners, lyrics), cannot see that show biz, is one big theater, farce, tragicomedy?

another wee mention:

This track was the first time we felt we were finally achieving the sound we were looking for. You can hear the influence of listening to PIL’s Metal Box, endless dub reggae and Human Fly by the Cramps. Yeah, sounds easy in retrospect but at the time nothing else out there sounded like this. All recorded on our original 4 track Porta studio sitting in the corner of the living room at 3 Pindock Mews along with the trusty Roland Space echo for the dub effects. At this time I was still using my old Fender bass with the words “The Whores of Babylon painted across the front, one of the names we had considered for the band. X was playing his Zebra striped Travis Bean guitar, you can hear the metallic sound, and Deg was getting there, slowly mutating the words. We were using an 808 drum machine, the same machine my new friend Andrew Eldritch was also using to provide the beat....

This seems to be TJ expanding on his "I respect his fanaticism" comment (and references to 200 different mixes where only :von: can hear the difference) which he made in QB's own brief interview with him on here. For all we criticise :von: for his perfectionism, the very varied output of someone like TJ shows that perhaps more artists should adopt the TSOM approach -after all, at times less is (no pun intended) more.

in the end? the "27" club? eldritch is twice that age and unlikely to self-destruct under the varying pressures of "fame" now!
both kurt and amy (bless her ) were vulnerable and weak, and made bad drug choices. thats what killed them, not artistic fanaticism or their unswerving vision.
apart from the fact that he has survived his excesses long enough to be aware of his own functional limits, eldritch is nobodys fool -and only stupid bastards do heroin...
as for johnny- i presume he's on about fucing thunders, sid viscious's donkey-idol, he doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as von. less talent than motley crue...and only slightly less tedious (though equally as extinct) as marc sodding bolan :von:

I rather like the music of Johnny Thunders and Marc Bolan and, come to that, Sigue Sigue Sputnik

you misunderstand me. each to their own indeed and i certainly don't listen to music i dont like, nor do i expect people to like what i listen to just because...the point is nobody would probably remember t-rex (a popular cooking fat i believe ;D :innocent: ) or the faint-heart-breakers if the cunts hadn't of died so pathetically embarrassingly. it makes fans of theirs feel honourbound in their shame to constantly evoke them, saying stuff like "you know marc atually wrote "ride a white swan" by accident when he was cracking one off one day...imagine what he'd have accheived if he'd lived".
utter obscurity is the answer of course. thunders accheievd what any greedy scag-stabber can accheiev if they can get their hands on enough brown to turn blue and snaffle it all without having to suck off old men for a tenner.

whats marc bolans favourite song?

One thing very interesting about the new SSS site is that TJ complains about having to go around doing all the promotion for the band while everyone else sat on their arses (getting drunk, doing cocaine, shagging anything that couldn't run up a tree in time and saying stupid things in the media), which is very similar to the complaints that Von used to make in the 1993-4 UTR at the time when Andreas left. But TJ has enough self-insight to realise that it was partly his fault for forgetting that the rest of the band were human beings rather than characters in his ongoing drama...

yeah, i'd have to disagree on that too.

bolan was massively popular while still alive, and thunders was already seen as a proto-punk legend with the new york dolls when he left and formed the heartbreakers.

I have to disagree with you there, certainly in regards to Marc Bolan and T.Rex - units sold prior to death would prove the case to be otherwise. And despite the fact that the New York Dolls or the Heartbreakers didn't shift as many album/singles, they did still shift enough BEFORE he died to ensure people remembered him because of his music rather than his death.

But hey, you can't put your arm around a memory

True!! :D I mean...Bolan certainly had his "fat Elvis years" resulting from too much cognac and cocaine but (as far as I'm informed) he actually quit binge drinking, came clean, slimmed down and was on his way "up" again... The birth of his son seemed to have a major impact on him back then. -> so I can't think you can compare him to Kurt Cobain really in this context...

(just my 2 cents but...I have to admit, that I've been a huge T.Rex fan, when I was a child... :P )

How is it embarrassing to die as a passenger in a car crash..?

I think any band that managed to get to number one in the charts four times is going to be remembered, death of lead singer or otherwise. Seem to remember Bolan was hosting a well-received music show and getting a bit of a second wind in terms of popularity when he died, for that matter.
Hell of a lot more than Eldo has achieved despite living twice as long.
