Anaconda XXX - classic or footnote ?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. It's pretty much exactly thirty years since the follow up to Alice/Floorshow was released, and I'd be particularly interested to read the views of those who first came across the song out of context, ie some time after it was originally released.

Do you think Anaconda is a bona fide Sisters classic along with Alice, Temple etc ?

Or was it one of the embarrassing "baby photos", an average (or worse) song which is just a footnote in the band's early history ?

I'd pop it into classic status myself.

It also still seems to hold its own live even today.

It's a bit weird, as I actually have my Anaconda t shirt on today :D
Agreed on the production & would have loved to seen a re-recorded rendition a la Body Electric, Alice & TOL.
But it'll always get me jiggling around whatever

Wasn't a fan until it made it into the Overbombing tour. Definitely better with big fat powerchords.

But I do prefer the she will, she will, she will, she will over the very suspect she wiiiIIIIIIiiiil version.. :urff:

Anyway, no however bad production can destroy a real good song, to the contrary ... :wink: ...

Anaconda it's one of the finest sisters songs, in fact, pretty much every single song from 80-83 it's that good.

The actual version it's IMO, better then the Original one, but i don't think this is the subject of this thread.

Drum intro and opening chords were just enough time to rush the dancefloor...

People forget that the so-called 'dirty' production quality sounded par for the course for a low-budget indie release at the time. The style also represented a further evolution after Alice and hinted at the band having lots of directions in which to turn.

Sounded great at the time, still gets my blood speeding today.

Top song, and a storming number live. I get why Eldritch and Marx renounce the production, being concerned as the writers with how much bigger and more powerful it could have sounded, but the spindly, throbbing, slimy soundscape of the record has a very fitting ambiance of its own.

I don't consider Anaconda a classic
It's very good (and most other bands would be most chuffed to have it in their repertoire) but it is not up there with the best of the Sisters - it only gets 10/10 not 11/10
The metaphor or allegory, or whatever the correct term is, is too obvious. It chugs along pleasantly but doesn't enthrall like some of the others

I love it! Always good for a smoke break/piddle break, and very thoughtful of the band to have a song just for that. :D

dodgy production or no " she will she will she will...." always fires the synapses and makes me dance like a lunatic !!! it gets a bronze medal from me...silver goes to Adrenochrome, gold to Body Electric....the oldies are the besties!!!

I've always loved the crisp production too. Miles better than the FALAA era when the curious idea of making the Doktor try to sound like a human drummer started to develop :roll:
