Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Hear me out. We had threads on lady gaga and lana del rey.

Does anybody else like this music? I was prejudiced at first, but give it a listen and it turns out to actually be fantastically creepy in a rather clever way. It's drowning in cheesy pop hooks but we like this corrosion don't we?

I admire your bravery in starting this thread :) ! The first time I heard Primadonna Girl the breathy girl-next-door vocals reminded me of Gorls At Our Best in a Lilly Allan kind of way before it went into standard Katy Perry
I bet :von: is on the phone to her right now arranging for her to couple of Sisters songs for his fag break at the next gig...whenever that may be.

Yeah that was the first song I heard too, and I callously dismissed it, telling me girlfriend at the time it was boring and unoriginal and she should know better.

But give the family jewels album a try (skip tracks 2-5) and get back to me on the distinction between her and katy perry.

Oh No! is a fantastic song and there's something very clever about the way she often mixes froth with darkness so that, on first listen, the songs seem like catchy pop but on closer examination turn out to be intelligent and biting. Primadonna is a good example of that.
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.

I think I must be searching the wrong act.
I can't find anything of merit in her material whatsoever.
Did a YT search & got How To Be A Heartbreaker straight off the bat & lasted 38 seconds before & exited.

Any pointers to something with substance?

My initial reaction to her was the same as everyone else in the thread, I think the Electra Heart album where the top youtube hits come from is definitely a bid for the Katy Perry audience at least superficially, but when taken as a whole in the context of the themes she'd developed in earlier work can still be construed to have some hidden depth. But you know the drill, earlier stuff is better etc, ie Floodland was a synthetically produced commercially driven bid for mainstream popularity next to the honest and expressive FALAA (but on closer examination is still rather subversive and has some very catchy tunes).

Not one of my favourites but you may be missing the irony in the lyrics (spelled out at around 2.25). Listen again with that in mind and you might see what I was talking about in my first post.

It's never mentioned in her influences but does anyone else hear a strong '80s vibe, especially in the first album? I can hear Eurythmics, John Foxx and many other '80s synth artists all through her music.

I definitely get the Hazel O vibe too, with a bit if the wonderful Dubstar in the backing. On occasions the vocals seem to get a bit Lene Lovich too, unfortunately, but still better than Lisa Cuthbert.
