RIP Iain Banks

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

I know it'd been discussed on another thread that time was short, but shorter than we thought.

Loved The WASP Factory (first time I ever laughed and was totally disgusted at the same time) enjoyed a few of his others but never really got into his SciFi .

Yeah it was awfully quick. I'm gutted.

I met him once, as we live in the Kingdom. Had just finished 'Complicity' and realised the guy, filling up, in front of me was Iain Banks. Had a nice wee chat, as I remember, before he roared off on his bike.

Sad news indeed.
See! I told you it wasn't 'just a phase'!

I couldn't get to grips with The Wasp Factory, but his Culture novels were staggering and without comparison in SF for me.

Shocking loss, came damn quickly. Did he manage to marry his wife before the End?

I think they did manage to marry, yes.

Incredibly sad. Great guy, really well thought of up here, no airs and graces. One of the few modern novelists I've really enjoyed. RIP.
