Technical Question Boots..DVD

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Ok,,, just got a dvd off ebay... it's a Def Leppard gig... two disks. They do not play thru....here is what the seller said after my complaint...mind you she is from USA and so am I.

I've seen this happen before in that it is the brand of player that is not
compatible with the Region Setting on the DVD disks. The only thing I can
do is get you to send them back to me and refund your money or send the
show to you on VHS Video. Whichever you want works for me :)

Another option is to pick up a $35 Apex DVD Player at Wal-Mart. Those
things will play ANY Disk. LOL

Best Regards,
Valerie

Yes her name is the same as mine.

WTF is this answer? I wrote back to ask for the tape VHS of it. Am I stupid or something? the disks play til a point then they off....like the matrix code..and suddenly stop.

This is a really top quality boot...until it dies..Is this normal?

I'm no expert. I have had the same problems with copied discs apparently because my DVD player is an old model. They are so cheap here now I might as well just buy a new one.

However, I understand if you take the back off and yoiu know what you're doing you can modify something. I'm sure it's on the interweb if you look for your model.

I really shouldn't be encouranging the watching of this DVD.

Thinking about it; if the player started playing it you would imagine it is comatable. So, maybe she has ripped you off. Ask her to send you another.

You can do that? I have never done the dvd thing on my computer, although it does have a dvd drive. This is frightening..I am becoming a geek right before my very eyes.

I will see what I can do with it before I send it back!

Thanks for your help.

Answer

There is basically 2 reasons your disc doesnt play

1) There are 2 Types of Blank DVD there is +R and -R , basically +R is the phillips system that is conpatable with 80% of all DVD players and there is the Sony / Panasonic DVD-R system that is far less conpatable also the -r system is used a lot by bootleggers as the blank DVDs are usually 40% cheaper than +R

2) On a DVD Recorded you can record in many different quality settions, lower quality=longer playing time.

It may be that the disc was NOT recorded in standard play mode (ie 2 hours on a 4.7 gb disk) if this is so them that may be why, try the DVDs of a friends player to make sure.

ok the 3)

The disc may not have been finalised properly

hope that Helps

I had a DVD go all Matrixy on me after 45 mins, I took it out of the player and discovered it was covered in finger prints and smears. Cleaned it (from centre to rim, of course) popped it back in and Presto Hey! it played fine.

Wow! I have played my lovely booties on my dvd drive in the computer. Both disks worked just fine.

Is it possible for me to copy them to better quality disks that would play on my dvd player? (The dvd player sound is through the surround sound system....as you can imagine...It can literally shake the house when turned up loud and is much better quality sound than the computer!)

I wish I had read your note before I bought some blank dvd's this morning. I had no idea about the +R / -R thing and guess which ones I got? LOL yep.. the -R  They were the least expensive...

Thank you so much for your reply!!!!! It helped immensely. :D

Oh and this gig rocks! It was last April in Baltimore....They had at least 2 cameras, and the sound is just ....Awesome! Whoever did this, produced quality!! If only Andrew's boots could sound so good... :von:

Thanks Barman Blast....It's nice to know I'm not yet an ubergeek! Hey, happy Saturday... well for you mate, it's Sunday. Enjoy!

And it's also to know that if I ever have a tekkie question, I can come here and ask and find the answer. Isn't learning new things fun?

Or phrased differently...wouldn't Andrew be proud of me? :von:

Shouldn't be a problem provided you have a DVD burner on your PC. Just do a straight DVD copy using something like Nero.

...oh, I'm back, kinda :)
