In an interview published in The Times in 1987, confided that he bought the newspaper just after lunch every day in Hamburg and could complete the legendary Cryptic Crossword in twenty minutes on a good day.
How proud he would have been last Friday, therefore, when the famous puzzle included a clue referring to an influential figure with a desire for Ecstasy which required the answer "eldritch". That's still impressive - I usually can't get a single clue. I love some of the smart-arse comments on that blog, you know the type : "currently suffering from bubonic plague and fending off an attack by a pack of wolves, so it took me eight minutes today - must be losing my touch etc etc".
