CARL ORFF - CARMINA BURANA
Used and abused to flog anything from the Third Reich to Old Spice to new "talent"
But basically Goth it just needs some geetars
"O Fortuna, sing this corrosion to me"
The translation isn't literal

Die Ärzte - Leichenhalle
(the transcription is awful. Don't use it to learn German. Or look at it. Ew.)

The first goth UK number 1 ? is a big fan of dubstep, so I shouldn't really be surprised at the link between the two genres.

If I remember, it was that he had the record (not sure about two) even though he didn't have a record player. Despite that, he felt it was important to own the artefact as the song was, in his view, so good.paint it black wrote:at the time, a 10 best things interview, he said he had two copies, as anything that good should be owned twice ~ something like that anywayNikolas Vitus Lagartija wrote:George Michael - Careless Whisper.
Not my own nomination, but that of Wayne and apparently.

Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

Catatonia had some great goth chord sequences, especially on their first album Way Beyond Blue which I played to death when it came out in the 90s.eastmidswhizzkid wrote: catatonia -chardonnay

Some awesome choices throughout - definitely agree with 'Careless Whisper' especially. I also find a bit of techno quite goth in it's own way.
Julie Covington - Only Women Bleed
Hazel O'Connor - Will You
The Church - Under the Milky Way
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
ABC - All of my heart
Black - Sweetest Smile (well goth)
and a lot of theme tunes from movies - some obvious like 'Betty Blue' or 'Paris, Texas', but also stuff like the main theme from 'Chaplin' fits in well on any goth mixtape.

A great selection, but no surprise as you are obviously a veteran of "goth mix tapes"! I'd have had The The and Propaganda on there as well.bearskin wrote:Some awesome choices throughout - definitely agree with 'Careless Whisper' especially. I also find a bit of techno quite goth in it's own way.

Love both those bands! The The are just so clever, when I listen to their music sometimes it seems they could have made a dozen more albums just from the ideas contained in one.Nikolas Vitus Lagartija wrote:A great selection, but no surprise as you are obviously a veteran of "goth mix tapes"! And Propaganda! Fantastic. I'm a big fan of the Human League as well, and I often listen to their music and Propaganda as counterpoints. There is some excellent electronic pop that fits outside the goth template, but has similar nuances - I know the likes of Ultravox have already been mentioned, but I get the same 'feeling' from some of the 80s 'mainstream' like Tears for Fears or Thompson Twins.
I don't know if everyone also gets that kind of gothic vibe from some reggae music as well - something like Sly & Robbie or Black Uhuru? I know I was a huge fan of reggae at the same time as I liked this other stuff when I was 18. In fact I rated pretty much 70% of what John Peel played - he was my musical educator.
Sorry to be obvious, but I would put some Pink Floyd on as well, and some of the darker Stones stuff too. And some Doors.

Razor Blade Alley by Madness

Madness goth? But yes, they actually did a lot of dark songs and that's certainly one of the darkest. But I'd say Grey Day is gother. And imagine Tomorrow's Just Another Day or Waiting for the Ghost Train done with shimmering goth guitars. (I've been getting heavy heavy into Madness lately.)
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.
