A Rock & A Hard Place "disco version"

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Just what is this? Is it one of those WEA mixes of F&L&A that floats around the internet, or is it just a miscellaneous demo? Whatever it is, its pretty good.

You can hear Eldritch saying something totally inaudible over the famous gap in the lyrics which nobody can make sense of (detailed listening to the finished song will reveal that he in fact does say "reverence").

Saved me from starting yet another thread Chris.

I don't know the answer to your question, but am interested in figuring out where it 'belongs'.

And, a little speculation can provoke some interesting replies, sometimes.

Was 'A Rock and a Hard Place' going to be the 3rd single from F&L&A? It's featured 4 times on the WEA pre-release tapes (more than any other track) so it seems it may have been earmarked for that honour.

Interesting point. To be honest I think it should have been! As much as First & Last & Always is one of my favourite albums ever, I have always been of the opinion that it doesn't truly get going until "A Rock...". "Black Planet" and "Walk Away" are good songs for sure but a little flat and un-dynamic in comparison. It starts to pick up with NTTC and by the time "A Rock" comes along the album is capable of tearing your face off at 50 paces! Would have made a better choice than NTTC or WA in my opinion.

I always thought nttc is a much better song than its released (and unreleased) versions. It could have been really big

Same wirh raahp. The disco version should have been the one to follow up on

I first heard R&HP "Disco Mix" on the "Victims Of Circumstance" cassette, bought from the little shop in the basement of Bad in Leeds.
It doesn't sound very disco though, I wonder if "disco mix" is an official title or a bootleggers title.

Here's a colour scan of the cassette cover because the wiki only has a b&w one.

Somewhere there's a whole thread discussing just what word Eldritch utters after "Valley of the" in that particular version of the song.

I can't be bothered - was there a decision about the word?

I think it's 'water' BTW.

re Dan's photo: I see the bootlegger couldn't even use a pair of scissors properly.

Going back to the original question in the first post - it isn't a demo as it has the same vocal take as the LP version.

Rock and a Hard Place is by far my least liked song on the album. No Time to Cry was already a poor single.

I downloaded Victims of Circumstance and it's a demo version on that release, not the version with the extra word. So the origin of the 'Disco' mix is still in question.

I found it here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFlQ0N3wypU

Dropped Japanese version? - I don't have an extra one floating around, so must be missing it.

Where can I get this one from?

I think PiB was saying that there's an alternate version that was initially considered for the Japanese release.

What I meant was, which bootleg/s feature the dropped version.
