1983 Virgin Prunes Gig Details

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Lovely! ... ;D :notworthy: ;D ... so I will have to update that page. Thank you for the pretty picture ... ...

April 17th, is quite a difficult gig anyway ... but it's good to know that it took place and was another support act with the Virgin Prunes.

Yeah Wiki says correctly that a bootleg claiming to be Mar 17th is actually the Feb 19th gig.

But then it gives the tracklist of the bootleg which contains the 2nd half of the Feb 19 gig, along with side B which is some BBC session material. That setlist doesn't belong on that page at all.

OK,
March the 17th was NOT a support act with the Virgin Prunes ... ...
On that day, there were Sex Gang Children, Look Back In Anger and Play Dead at Brixton Ace ... and The Sisters? Not at all? ...   ...

Impossible... Image ... It's even listed in the Official Gigography. Image ... Soo ... what is missing is the correct setlist. Anybody? ... ...

@PIB
Just to clarify: but you did notice the hint in the lower part of the ad to the Virgin Prunes + The Sisters of Mercy on April 6?

Umm, no.

The page says: "the source for those bootlegs is another gig of The Sisters at Brixton Ace in February 1983."

That is correct.

But underneath you have the setlist for that same February 1983 gig. The setlist doesn't belong on that page.
(That setlist is from a bootleg LP. Side A is the 2nd half of the Feb '83 gig. Side B is a BBC session. Neither belong on that page.)

There is no "correct" setlist because a recording isn't available.

Ah ok. No recording, that's the point! Also im my collection of recordings in data there is only that bootleg stored under that date.

And yes, the setlist is wrong, but I've noted it there, in order to end long-existing rumours and to make clear that the setlist in the LIFE book is not correct. I will add the info about the real sources of the tracks in that setlist to make things entirely clear.

Thanks for your info and assistance ... :D ...

EDIT:
Improved the page now (hopefully to the better?)

Sabine , sorry if i let you think that the Sisters were just forgeted on the paper list ,that wasn't what i would like to said.
For me the 17/03 was a fake date, and this fake date was noticed by old bootlegs , by lot of old tapes, and also by the official site who is a good base but incomplet and with few errors regarding the old period.(like they also wrongly notice the fake date Mallemunt gig 24.08.83).
Next week end i wil do a detailed topic regarding the Brixton ace 83 gigs with all the informations i got ;)

Thanks to all for helping to sort out the somewhat hazy gigography of 1983, especially (not for the first time recently) @spiggymr7 for sharing both his evidence and his knowledge. Whilst we are on the subject of the London gigs, is there not some confusion on the Wiki about 6th May and 29th June ?

Yes, that's what I thought, thanks for confirming. So no FFL on 6th. Smiths anecdote for 6th still viewable here http://web.archive.org/web/201101120422 ... 830506.htm

Thanks for the correction and info, spiggymr7 ... :D ... I see, that page will need some more "explanation" ... deleting it would only lead to further irritation because the gig is still in the official gigography.

Yeah, the Mallemunt miracle is half-way resolved, at the latest by the festival poster I found on the web. At least it is 100% clear that it was not on 24.08.83.

Looking forward to your further disclosures ... ;D ... :notworthy: :notworthy: ...

Aha! I was going to say that yesterday but I didn't want to cause any more confusion.
What about 10th March? I once saw that in a gig list as the correct date, not 17th March.

Yes. In my recording of the 20th Jan 87 repeat (during the Janice Long show) she states that the first broadcast was 10th March 83 with a repeat on 11th April 83. (And recorded 6th March, so I'm led to believe.)

There you go, 10th March, Brixton.

Interestingly, in the repeat, Janice Long also gives the lineup as...

Craig Adams - bass, keyboard, synthesizer
Ben Gunn - guitar
Gary Marx - guitar
Andrew Eldritch - vocals, drum machine, guitar

Notice what this one says in the top left corner!

Image

The show would have been "Whatever You Want" (also known as "Whatever You Didn't Get" when it was repeated) because that show was being broadcast during that period and it showed a lot of footage shot at Brixton Ace. They definitely never broadcast anything from the gig or we'd know about it, surely? I once wrote to Channel 4 for clarification on whether the gig was filmed but they just brushed me off with something about the company that made that show no longer existing. But knowing the way TV loves to throw stuff away and erase tapes... even if it was filmed it's unlikely to have been kept unless one of the production team was a fan.

Where did that 14 March date come from?

PIB quoted what Jensen said on 10th March...

It seems unlikely (but not impossible) they'd play Frank's on 14th March and again on 26th March, but Jensen didn't mention it. Could it be possible that it was originally scheduled for 14 March then moved to 26th March?

I've also been told by someone who was there that they played Frank's in March/April '82 and again in Oct/Nov '82. No exact dates though unfortunately.

At the time I did the page for 14 March, I exchanged loads of info, pictures, lyrics and stuff and also checked all the dates with Patti82 from the Ultimatesistersguide
http://www.ultimatesistersguide.org/documents/1983.htm

Looking at the dates listed there, I think those with a yellow header are meant to be unconfirmed or otherwise unclear ... and not listed in the official gigography.

Looks like the yellow just means no recording is available, because press cuttings exist for some of the yellow ones.
