Fantasy Gig Going

I think we may have done this before at some stage but...
I was watching the Grant Gee Joy Division doc (again) last night and was thinking the usual 'God, I wish I could have been there.' thought.

So, which 3 bands from any period of music history would you see (and where if you care)?

I'd have to go for;
The Doors at The Whiskey.
Joy Division - Anywhere after Unknown Pleasures, when they'd become tight and intense.
Jim Hendrix - A small smokey venue.

The Small Faces, somewhere like the Marquee Club.

The Velvet Underground would definitely be up there for me too.
As would MC5 or The Stooges.
And maybe The Pink Floyd (with Syd).

Some great suggestions here, and others which spring to mind would be The Beatles at the Star Club in Hamburg in the early 60s, the Stones at Altamont (a sadly surreal experience) and Oasis at King Tut's the night Alan McGee signed them.
My own choices are rather more sad and mundane :
1) TSOM at York 16/2/81
2) UK Decay on the For Madmen Only tour (also 1981)
3) Magazine on the Secondhand Daylight tour (1979)

Floyd with Sid oh that is an interesting one, I do like the Syd stuff.
I just thought Ultravox with John Foxx, a completely different ball game to the later years.

black sabbath -with All Four of the original line-up. anytime before 1975 pref. i've seen them with Ozzy singing but no Bill Ward (orig.drummer). who was/is such a personal hero and inspiration that its quite sad that i've never seen him play and never will.

x-ray spex -(poly styrene is dead) so again anytime but as we're doing fantasies i'll say 1976 100 club supporting...

the sex pistols -before the storm broke, when no-one had ever heard anything like it.

as 2 of those are on the same bill my 3rd would be :
The Sisters Of Mercy -york festival 1984. not only the classic lin-up but as far as i know the only time they have ever played on my birthday.

Spiders is a good call - I have a friend who saw Ronno play and it burns everytime I see him!
I have bought tickets for the same act 3 times, each in a different year and each gig was cancelled. They're dead now, gutted

Anyway:
Nina Simone, mid-late 60s, NYC
Elvis, early jumpsuit era - big band, big choir, big everything.
Lollapalooza '91. All of it

It's the trick not to think this through as then I'd never be able to limit myself to only 3!

1. Ramones. No matter where, but let's just take NYC, Rocket To Russia daze. One of the biggest mistakes of my life: to not have seen them once.
And I've had more than one opportunity... Something I just cannot explain to myself.
2. Joy Division. a 79 gig somewhere nice in the UK or the Paradiso gig in Amsterdam 80. For obvious reasons...
3. Revolutionary Dub Warriors. Bultrock festival, Ravels, Belgium. Maddest festival I ever enjoyed. Everybody far out, right in the woods, just mental. The year before I first went the Dub Warriors played there. I've never seen them and absolutely love their stuff, especially the first album. Steve Swann has passed away some years ago so will never see them. On-U Sound rules the nation!


I add one anyway, just because I have too: The Sisters at Doornroosje, Nijmegen June 84.
My favouritest bootleg of them was recorded there and it's The Sisters in their coolest era

2. The Sisters of Mercy; Wednesday 17 October 1984; Rock City, Nottingham http://www.last.fm/event/4088826+The+Si ... tober+1984 I didn't go, too young (probably).

3. The Field Mice; Friday 12 January 1990; Kool Kat, Nottingham http://www.last.fm/event/732454+The+Fie ... nuary+1990 I went. Stunning. Saw them again later but this one would be the one to go to again. I'm sure they won't return.

No JAMC, no Pistols, no FOTN, no DK, no Crazyhead, no Violent Femmes, no Bitter Springs, just three...

Having said that , am very lucky to have seen
the likes of Bowie & the Spiders at Leeds Rolerina 1973, Joy Division supporting Buzzcocks Leeds uni, Sisters at Wembley 1990 , Thin Lizzy Leeds town hall 1974, Cramps Leeds Uni, Devo Manchester Apollo twice about 1980 and 2008 , Ramones 3 times Leeds Uni twice and once in Manchester.Theatre of Hate early days. and Wolfsheim the Purple Moon festival, Ghent, Belgium.
about 12 years ago.

So my message to you all is, if your thinking of going to a gig , don't think, just go. it pays off.
Don't waste your money going on holidays abroad unless its gig related like I do. no point saying, wish i would have gone to that.

The Sisters - probably '83 or '84

Tom Waits - Some time in the 80s, Swordfishtrombones/Franks Wild Years era.

Einsturzende Neubauten - early 80s, maybe the 'legendary' gig where they tried to drill a hole in the floor.

The Cure, Seventeen Seconds tour 80 or Prayer tour 89 or any time inbetween

Killing Joke when they still played tracks from Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, and other songs off Night Time that aren't just LLB or Eighties

Japan around 81/82

Coz I is old I can go at Nikolas, Alex, Limur and Adrena and yes you are right to have UK Decay, the proper Ultravox, Sisters at RC, The Cure (albeit it mine was the Three Imaginary whatsits tour) and Killing Joke playing more than the obligatory Eighties track

If I could go back in time, I'd have saved my pocket money and gone to see The Specials in 1979 but I'd been out the week before to see the aforementioned Cure gig and got no money left.

I'd go to see The Who during the whole Daltrey fringe jacket and long perm phase

And the last choice, ooh, erm possibly Alice Cooper on the Billion Dollar Babies tour. I loves mi Alive I do

And if I'm allowed a sneaky extra one it'd be Gene Vincent in 1960 - to tell him and his tour buddy to not get in that car.

Yes Nik gigs still are good as they ever were , that's why I still go to lots.
