I had a free trial of Winzip for 28 days but now it's expired and they want 31 quid for the full version which I'd rather not pay if I don't have to. Can anyone recommend a free long term solution?

No probs.
There are dozens of others, but 7Zip is a virtual Swiss army knife.

You don't have to pay for winzip, after the 28 days it continues to nag but the nag screen can be dismissed.
That's assuming they've not changed it for the newer versions? (If so, an older version can be obtained from oldversion.com), or follow the other recommendations and get 7zip or winrar.
