Thanks Mugabe. It was the "me" before "her" that caused my uncertainty.

I am appalled at this. Its unbeleivable! after ive tryed to be grammatically incorrect...I am finally outed.
You are the grammar Fuhrer. All bow to your authority. You will crush all the inferior people under the soles of your jackboots, and any who question your motives will be eliminated. Your punishment is being the bane of every other person's existence, because you're constantly contradicting stupidity. Everyone will be gunning for you. Your dreams of a master race of spellers and grammarians frighten the masses. You must always watch your back. If only your power could be used for good instead of evil.

Not exactly hard though, is it?
Still, I've always rated readability more highly than grammatical precision. But that's just me.

its a good thing that, in spoken language, everything is linguistically correct if the listener understands what you are trying to communicate.

Can we get rid of the Nazi nonsense - find it ever so slightly distasteful.
Thanks.

OK, I cheated and pretended I was American.
If we're all grammar Nazi's, what's the excuse for the typos and rubbish that appears on here? My top tip is to actually look at your monitor when typing.

Say,
I never found Nazis or any reference to them in a supposed 'humourful' context amusing. Maybe it is the cultural context I was brought up in. I expected some understanding of this on these boards certainly considering the outspoken way Andrew has put this across himself.RicheyJames wrote:can we get rid of the humourless tone - find it ever so slightly irritating.
Glad to see someone's paying attention. And not trying to pick a fight. Which seems to be the general monday blues thang on here today.

oh, do lighten up. nobody's praising the nazis, their deeds or their ideals. the item in question is merely a humourous reaction to those who describe myself, and others of my ilk, as pedants for actually caring about the way our language is used. if you feel that that is inappropriate then you're entitled to look away.Karst wrote:I never found Nazis or any reference to them in a supposed 'humourful' context amusing. personally i believe that there should be no taboos in comedy and judging by the recent reaction to jokes about paedophilia and amputation i don't think i'm entirely alone...

Sorry, I simply find it quite inappropriate. Certainly as it is Holocaust Memorial Day tomorrow. http://www.holocaustmemorialday.gov.ukRicheyJames wrote:oh, do lighten up.
I'm not saying you do - and I don't think that anybody in right mind in these boards do. I do understand that it is done in a humourous context involving yours and others attitude towards spelling. But you might consider that putting up an image of Adolf Hitler ath the top of a tread might be offensive to some people.RicheyJames wrote: nobody's praising the nazis, their deeds or their ideals.
That really is an invalid argument considering something like this is posted on a public forum.RicheyJames wrote: if you feel that that is inappropriate then you're entitled to look away.
I'm sure the terms and conditions of these boards indicate what the limits are to this. I personally never visit the Joke forum.RicheyJames wrote: personally i believe that there should be no taboos in comedy and judging by the recent reaction to jokes about i don't think i'm entirely alone.

well i truly am sorry. it was never my intention to cause offence. although i don't see why the proximity to any particular date should make something more or less offensive...Karst wrote:Sorry, I simply find it quite inappropriate. again, it was not my intention to cause offence to anyone. but i still stand by everything i have posted. both on this thread and elsewhere on the baord. and i really am amazed that you find a simple image quite so staggeringly offensive. it's precisely this sort of demonisation of the nazis which allows them to retain their power to offend. treat them to the full glare of publicity and their ideas are more easily shown up for the half-baked rantings that they are. even better, ridicule them in any way possible. i suggest you try to track down a copy of the great dictator.Karst wrote:But you might consider that putting up an image of Adolf Hitler at the top of a thread might be offensive to some people.
RicheyJames wrote: if you feel that that is inappropriate then you're entitled to look away.
now that's just patently ridiculous. so nothing that could in any way offend anyone should be allowed in the public domain? and who do you suggest we appoint as the arbiter of what is and is not offensive? i maintain that if you find the subject so distasteful there is no need to read this particular thread. and while we're about it; is it not more offensive to title a thread "Mass killings and eugenics are a good thing"?Karst wrote:That really is an invalid argument considering something like this is posted on a public forum.
hmm.. i don't recall. it's an awful long time since i signed-up to this forum and if i'm honest i didn't really read the t&c when i did. did you? ultimately, it's quiffy's site so it's up to him where to draw the line. as far as i recall he's only felt it necessary to do so previously in cases of overt racism and unnecessary personal abuse.Karst wrote:I'm sure the terms and conditions of these boards indicate what the limits are to this.
you really should. occasionally it's actually quite amusing.Karst wrote:I personally never visit the Joke forum.

After all this, I believe Mr James has raised an important issue:
Furthermore, English has one of the largest vocabularies of any language, and when I see it reduced to the likes of "OMG ur well g0fFik innnit !!!11!1!" I want to scream. (I hasten to add that this sort of text-speak is seldom seen on the Heartland forum, unless used for comedic effect.) That the language of Shakespeare, Milton, and Blake can be reduced to this is surely a matter for shame for all native English speakers.
Lastly, I am amazed at the fluency with which many non-native speakers of English use the language, frequently doing so more correctly than many, or even most natives. I do have some proficiency with some other languages, but I know that I would be simply incapable of following the kinds of discussions that we have here in any language other than English.
As this forum (and much of the Internet) is conducted in written language, surely it is an aid to communication to attempt to use the language in a proper manner? While deliberate ambiguity is the goal some seek from their writings ( ) on a forum such as this, it is surely best that the ideas of a member are communicated in as clear a way as possible. Such clarity is improved by correct use of grammar, spelling and punctuation, whereas mistakes can only lead to confusion.RicheyJames wrote:...those who describe myself, and others of my ilk, as pedants for actually caring about the way our language is used...

How right you are Mr Blast! I'm rather uncomfortable about being branded a Nazi just because I can spell and punctuate. It implies that those who can't are somehow better, nicer people. I don't think this is a moral issue myself.Red Sunsets wrote:Can I just add - Sisters Gegen Nazis.
