St John's, Oxford. Matriculation Photo. 1977

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Saw this 25 years ago. Features A Taylor and B Steemson. Anyone else ever clocked this? Brown suit, white bowtie ...

I'd love to see it myself. Is there anywhere I could find it?

IIRC you matriculate when you join a college, not when you graduate.

Also, contacting the college might not be any good - I'd imagine it's more likely to be a friends/family photo of the event than an official college record?

We often receive requests from alumni for copies of matriculation and graduation photos. Gillman & Soame now have a new service, called ImageBank, which allows you to search for, and order, old photos. The St John's archive can be found here: www.gsimagebank.co.uk/sjc/?t=stjohnscollege2014. Please be aware that you need to log in (by providing your email address) before you can browse.

This page has some matriculation photos from St John's but unfortunately not the year concerned.

Oops my mistake! In my defence I don't think Hudderfield Poly did matriculation photos.

It's an official photo with students posed in rows. Almost certainly taken the very day of matriculation in the Sheldonian Theatre - round the corner and over the road from St John's. All 1977's new members of the college are in sub fusc - formal attire: dark suit, Commoner's Gown, white bow tie. Each student named, including A Taylor (maybe it even said AWH Taylor) and B Steemson. I saw it by walking into the College and asking a lady in an admin office to show it me. She obliged. Doubt that would happen nowadays.

And ... yes, markfiend. Exactly like 1978 but 12 months earlier. Probably taken in the Front Quadrangle of the college.

I don't think most do. Must be an Oxford/Cambridge thing, as the individual colleges tend to be smaller. (I learned all I know about Oxbridge from University Challenge, Douglas Adams and Inspector Morse.)
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.
