every version of every song from the Gift/Floodland era

hi guys

so i am moving to the next chapter of my attempt to establish a list of all the versions (mixes and/or edits) of all the SOM songs

this part is dedicated to the Gift/Floodland era

since there are a lot more tracks than for the Vision Thing era and I most definitely will need a lot of feedback from the board to establish a comprehensive list, i am gonna break it down into four parts:

1-This Corrosion-Torch-Colours
2-Dominion/Mother Russia-Sandstorm-Ozymandias-Untitled
3-Lucretia My Reflection
4-Other songs from Floodland/Gift

Below is the first batch: This Corrosion-Torch-Colours

As far as different edits of the same mixes are concerned, I am only listing edits that have more than a 10 seconds difference (longer or shorter).

As far as the US college radio mix of This Corrosion is concerned, does anybody know in what format the track was provided to the radio stations? Was it on a tape or vinyl? Does anybody on the board own an original media?

As far as Torch is concerned, I can't really detect a difference between the different formats, but maybe there is... Would be interested to find out!

Same with Colours, it sounds to me that the extended version is the same across all formats (i.e. bonus track version on the LP is the same as the 12" version). but maybe I am wrong on this.

In the list below, I am not including demo versions, only tracks that were officially released.

I uploaded a version which was exactly that length, an encode from a cassette & speedcorrected. If it still has the original tags, for the genre mine had "Gothic Rock" for the id3v1 tag and "G*thic Rock ;)" for the id3v2 tag.

I remember the-happening saying he was the originator of the recording - someone in the US sent him the tape in Aug/Sept 87 (although my copy came from someone else but it originates from the same copy). He'll maybe be able to tell us the name of the college radio station. It was taped off the radio (rather than from a radio insider which would have been better!) hence why the beginning is slightly incomplete.

That all seems correct. Presumably there is some kind of official Elektra promo for the College Mix, either 12" or CD.

I haven't listened to compare them, but this is likely to be a completely different recording. It was generally the policy of TOTP to have bands record a new version of the song to mime to on the show. This was due to a complicated series of agreements with the musicians' union. I don't think anyone ever mimed to the actual commercially released version after 1966.

The rules changed frequently, miming to the 7" was fine for most of the 80s but at some point they decided that just the vocals had to be live or a band wouldn't be allowed on - wasn't Corrosion just the 7" with an early fade?

Yes the rules changed at various times. Much of 80's TOTP was mimed (even the sound of the audience cheering at the end of each song was a recording so the studio audience knew when to join in!).

Then at some point in the 80's there was a backlash with lots of people expressing their disgust at all the miming and they started having live performances but this didn't last very long, quickly trickling away into just the occasional semi-live performance and before long it was back to miming full-time again.

The only noticeably semi-live Sisters vocal during that era was Lucretia at Montreux which underneath the recorded vocal at a *very* low level you could hear a live vocal.

As far as music videos go, it was common for vocals to be mixed louder, presumably because many tv speakers were crappy little things. I don't know if any of the Sisters vids had that treatment though because I've not checked.

I noticed 2 things...

Track 11 is actually just an early fade of the full length version. It has none of the edits present in any of the other mixes.

There is a difference in the fade in of Colours on the Floodland CD vs. the This Corrosion 12". The short, early fade version on the CDS has the same intro as the 12".

The College Radio mix is one I've not heard before, and I wonder if it's merely a different cut/paste job or something else...

The College Mix is an early mix sent out to radio stations. It's a unique mix.

Didn't someone weed a 2cd set of TC, torch & colours versions here some years back. Would be nice to know which version was from where on that.

The US College Mix appears on the 'Demos' bootleg lp and also some copies of the Victims Of Circumstance tape.

Just checked the Nocturnal 2cd compilation from 1998. It has the 3.59 single edit on it.
