I get about 200 + emails a day at home - then again I have 12 home based Email Addys.
Dont Panic I have Symantec / Norton virus softare running all the time!
I have had the false "pay pal" email and I always get a few "completely blank" emails - which do appear to contain anything - bad or good!
The thing I hate most is the "university degree on line" mails and the mails that state that you can "unsubscribe" just to find a dead URL! - I think there are laws against this sort of thing!
I used to get loads of "Junk" to my 2 MSN / Hotmail accounts but Microsoft appear to have "pulled their finger out" for once.

dear me some people don't have any idea.... no wonder viruses are so common that sysadmins like myself end up watching 300 blocked copies appear at the company I work for in ONE day.... I feel for u too mh... but you should be using at least 3-level gateway, exchange server AND desktop protection, centrally managed by something like ePo or equiv.. that way floppy's won't matter either
If you think a firewall protects you in any way from getting a virus... get ya coat.

Viruses are only about number 3 or 4 on my "list of stuff that damages the network" anyway. Oracle Java-based webforms, Lexmark Print Servers and Lotus Notes are way above them.
But - while you're busy trying to get a virus out (and if you do think you'll never get one in you're only fooling yourself) do be nice and make sure that it's not going to spread from your organisation as well.
At least now I can say that I have a cast iron strategy in place for next time - and there will definitely be a next time. Even if you're running Linux on an enterprise network (God help you if something goes wrong on a m*****n-critical server and needs to be fixed) you're always going to have one or two vulnerable machines around, and that's all it takes to kill your bandwidth.

we recently had a mail from tech support asking everyone to clear out their sent items folders as the exchange server was filling up

Not really. As an Exchange admin (among other things) I can assure you that the problem is more likely grounded in a huge MDB file on the server. It can take 5% or 50% of the available disk space, but that mother is still gonna be unreliable. I prefer to keep loads of smaller Exchange stores with an upper size limit of about 5GB, helps prevent corruption too cos the old JET technology is not so good.
