Berlin for my birthday, Euro Disney for the children, Brittany and Normandy thats it all were quite nice. With new child (due March) we probably won't be going away next year, though will have to do a food and tobacco run to France and Belgium soon.

This past year?

Started with a secret m*****n to NYC. Shhh. Oh, and a s**t ton of trips to Nevada to campaign in swing counties. (Which we won. Yay.)

I take my boys on a cruise each year because, as a single parent, it is easiest to contain them on a boat. We went to Honduras, the Mayan pyramids, zip-lining and NASA this year.

And I finally returned to England after living there 25 years ago. Went to Norwich, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Leeds, but I didn't spend much time in any one place. :)

Also managed a trip to Belgium and Amsterdam in there between Norwich and Birmingham.

We went to Up Helly Aa (Shetland) in January, for the Viking fire festival. Then Sark in the Channel Isles in June, Iran in September, Portugal in November.
Some days I amaze myself. Other days I put the laundry in the oven.

I've been to Sark and Jersey. Iran amazing. Did you do a tour of Iran on a organised trip? I would love to do a tour of Shiraz?. Then I would like to go to the Persian gulf to Kish Island!! Most fascinating country I went a few yrs ago to Petra/Jordan and Aquba on the red sea. :) The nearest to Iran I've got is Persian rug!! :lol:

Yes we did an organised group tour of Iran, as Brits are only allowed to visit as a tour group. It was amazing, we did Shiraz, Esfahan, Yazd, Necropolis and Persepolis. I had to wear headscarf, long sleeves, long skirt / baggy trousers all the time but the heat wasn't too bad as it was dry desert heat rather than the humid heat you get in Central America or South East Asia. No alcohol whatsoever, and serious penalties if you are caught drinking. It's definitely worth a visit and there seems to be a window of opportunity to visit at the moment while it's relatively stable there, so we were pleased we got to see it before Trump got elected.

I'd love to visit as well, for a new perspective. Music is controlled there. Remember the opening act, Hypernova? They used to have to run from their own gigs when law enforcement would show up. (They started playing in Iran.)

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do for holidays these days. Our last family holiday abroad was Crete in 2012. It was lovely but felt rather long for the teen who didn't really want to be with us so much of the time. Since then we've just holidayed in Cork with the same group of families we know well. It's the same drill every year but at least all the kids are similar ages and they do enjoy it, so it works for us. I'd still like a change from this soggy island this year but then one person doesn't like sun, another doesn't like snow and so it goes.

Iran does sound fascinating though. Maybe I should just mention that and gauge the reaction :lol:

I'll second Squeaky's recommendation - Iran is fab! It's a lot more open than you'd think - at least, the surveillance is no where near as obvious as you find in some other places. You're free to walk around pretty much anywhere (we nearly got arrested in Esfahan for going down to the bridges before dawn to take photos - the rozzers at a checkpoint called the tour-leader and got him out of bed to vouch for our identities, but after that we got a snappy salute and a "welcome to Iran!" from the senior police bod), people are friendly and happy to talk to you, they're very approachable and keen to practice their English. I was there when Ahmadinejad was in power - we'd get into conversations with college kids:
"Where do you come from?"
England.
"England! But we hear that the English do not like us!"
Ah, our prime minister doesn't like your president, but we don't like our prime minister.
"Ah, this is good! We don't like our president either!"

It's an amazing place - huge percentage of the population is under 30, thanks to the baby-boom during the Iran-Iraq War, so most of them don't remember the revolution, and the "death to America" thing is mostly lip-service.
The only downside is the lack of booze, but if you know where to look and who to ask then it's there. They keep some around for the jewish population (who, not being muslim, are allowed to consume it, so long as they don't sell it on), and there's a lot of home-distilling happening in basements. Allegedly.

It's a fun place - you should go!
