Mark, I used to live on Springfield Mount as a student in 1982/3 so you can guess the pub we used as our common room ;-)

In those days sunglasses were both on and off, mostly off when playing pool though, nice bloke (for a southerner) :-)

I chatted to him about Ely and I think he said he went to "Kings school" independent school. Quite possible if his father had a rank in the RAF? RAF Ely used to have it's own hospital.

Yup, he's a Forces brat, RAF IIRC.

I have met him a couple of times and he has been a perfect bloody gentleman to me. 8)
