Wow - huge Saxon find in Southend!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. I thought this was going to be a story about finding some early demos from a naff heavy metal band. Then I saw the 1939 date and realised they haven't been around that long. Just seems it. :von:

I think the road can be kissed goodbye until it's properly excavated. So you're going to go see it? Cool! I love that sort of stuff. I had the best time in Italy this summer wandering the Forum Romanum and Pompeii. Very very cool!

why not? clearly the site has been properly excavated and recorded. the finds have been removed for public display. what difference does it make if they now slap a road over the hole?

but that doesn't answer my question. why shouldn't it be built over? i'm all in favour of sites like this being properly investigated but once this is done (as it appears to have been here) then it's just another hole in the ground. isn't it?

Well, I live about two miles away, and having spent months slating this town as the worst in the world it would be unfair for me not to take an interest when something so remarkable turns up.

Besides, always like a bit of history. There's nothing like hiding in the past to get me over the present :D

The initial objection to the road-widening scheme was about loss of public open land in the park. That still applies and the public space can be reinstated.

Of course the irony is, without the road this would never have been found.

I predict another round of protests, delays to the project and excessive whining when the costs go up and so do the council taxes. The ultimate fate of the road interests me more as an observer than someone actively involved.

Richey, when I grew up in Arizona, for miles around there was the desert. Lots of dust and cactus. It's now completely paved over with housing developments and roads.

I realize that "progress" means building over things, but for christs sake, lets keep some of what Used to be, so it can be appreciated by future generations. And if you call me a tree hugger I'm gonna ask SG to slap you for me!
