I tell you what, I'd rather have my long term medication than the depression and anxiety it's treating.

Some of the 'negligable side-effects' of anti-depressants are laughed away by the Big Pharma lobby, all I am saying, if you know someone on meds for a depression, keep them on a close watch and call them once in a while to hear if all goes well.
Then again, you should do the same wiht the ones NOT on meds....

Again, medicated depression is a lot easier to cope with than unmedicated.

Unfortunately, medication often enough becomes the only therapy ... while the real causes are fully neglected, markfiend wrote:Again, medicated depression is a lot easier to cope with than unmedicated.
since from that moment on depression is treated as a mere "physical problem". And that, IMO, is just wrong.
Medication eases the symptoms, no more and no less. For some it is useful, for others it makes things worse
as they loose contact to the underlying misguided train of thought and have no more chance to learn how to
stop, turn and steer it. And no matter what, sooner or later there is always the day to remember oneself.
Then again, overcoming depressive trauma takes contrary experience ... something that is very hard to find,
in our neoliberal times just like ever before, sad as it is ...

Would you say all this to a diabetic about their insulin?

... ... you are forgiven, anyway ... ...markfiend wrote:Sorry that was probably overly snarky.
If I had found a way to heal depression, I had more right to be so critical about meds ... For many they are a real relieve... that is just a fact.
Mark -maybe a bit! - but i know what you mean, it was the same example i would have used.
Being645 - i hear where you're coming from, and for some that is true, every person, and every case is different and we should respect that, obviously medication is not treating any underlying causes and so that always needs to be looked into and for some people medication is not the right answer.
I have a friend who has had all sorts of therapy and is on medication. The only time she tried to take her life was when she was off her meds, for her, certainly for now, she cannot be without them.
No-one wants to rely on medication, but for some people it is the only thing that will allow them to function at all.
None of us know what Chris was going through and it's not for us to say what he should or shouldn't have done.

Of course, I never said that meds are bad for the treatment (or, if you will, the alleviation of) depressions, just be wary of the side-effects of said medication, eg suicidal tendencies (not the band).

The same could be said for any medicine. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) accounts for the majority of drug overdoses in the "western" world.Izzy HaveMercy wrote:Of course, I never said that meds are bad for the treatment (or, if you will, the alleviation of) depressions, just be wary of the side-effects of said medication, eg suicidal tendencies (not the band).

I wasn't planning to post in this thread, but I guess I need to. I still can't believe that he's really gone. CC was my absolute favorite male vocalist - probably ever (sorry AE, Mr. Bowie, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Hewson, Mr. Davies, Mr. LeBon, et al...). He was also my favorite person to sing along to, whenever I got the urge to blast some tunes (out of others' hearing, of course). The fact that he was an utterly beautiful human didn't hurt, either (*cough*). To say that I'm gutted and sickened is an understatement. Really at a loss as to how to process his death...as I suspect so many others are, too.
I left my heart in Ballycastle...
