How long can the Sisters continue... ?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I don't have huge amounts of time to contemplate what happens in the Sisters scene, but tonight I discovered a recent online TSOM interview regarding the Trump election and a possible new TSOM album if Trump indeed gains office.

So, what's going on?

... and sorry if this topic has been discussed before...

Mr.E should have disbanded the band in 2000. Than they would have been a legend still..Now live..sorry..ugh..

Or released the Summer EP in 1997 with Susanne and Come Together and War on Drugs or whatever new track..

I am sorry but the voice is gone..I love the Sisters and what they have given me in dark times. Amazing music and lyrics..but Sisters 2003 ish they are a joke..Chris and Ben make it still watchable but E is just wrecked..

I'd love to hear a new record. I suspect that in the studio, Von sounds fine. But I doubt he's got the desire to make a record, despite what he says about Trump.

If he did it, I'd buy 10 - hell, 20! - copies. But I doubt I'll have the opportunity. I'd be very happy if he proved me wrong, however.

If you're reading this, Andy: please prove me wrong.

As long as they sell out shows?

I had a great time tonight, and I suspect some others in the pit did too :)

Yeah, we're not getting anything new, but why would you even expect that at this point? You can wish for it, but that's something different.

You know what you're getting if you buy a ticket for the live shows, and if you don't like it just listen to the old recordings.

absolutely. it's obvious really isn't it? unfortunately for some reason there are always those who enjoy little more than slagging the band under any circumstance. fortunately those people are fast becoming the only ones who care about their opinions.

Two consecutive sold out shows at a premier London venue. Something that they wouldn't have been able to do five years ago. Despite the gloom and doom from some quarters the Sisters audience is getting bigger every year. Almost the entirety of the audience on Saturday night belting out the chorus of Walk Away didn't care that it wasn't 1983 anymore. Everyone I saw on both nights was having a good time. Try it instead of moping over ropey youtube videos and wanting Ben Gunn back.

 It is possible to enjoy ropey 1983 YT videos AND the current band. In answer to the OP, TSOM will tour as long as AE is healthy enough and can perform to a standard he himself is happy with.

I love the Sisters, and have no hankering after some return to 1983 - I like the guitar driven sound and bombast of the current incarnation.

but . . . .

I think they need new songs. I preferred it when a tour came along and they would try out new material. Some worked better than others, but it was all part of the Sisters experience. It's nice to hear old songs come back into the setlist, like Walk Away, and I even like the endless surf guitar covers, but if he/they want to be still doing this in a few years time, and I see no reason why they shouldn't, then you can't keep playing the same gig over and over again.

To be clear, I think the last three of four gigs represent a very welcome freshening up of the presentation. I think the stage set, the reduced smoke, the spring-cleaned arrangements and a return to the musicality of the songs, is very very welcome.

But prior to that, the Sisters essentially delivered the same stage show for ten years. That's lazy.

I think it's obvious to all but the most delusional of Sisters fans that there is never going to be a new album - fine, live shows it is every year - but give us something to look forward to. We need to make new memories, not revisit old ones.

As this seems to be the only "new" material in their set maybe they are working up to a covers CD of guitar instrumentals.

..for as long as folk by tickets. Most folk buy tickets now for nostalgia reasons - the rare night out, reliving their youth, chance to catch up with old mates - not because the girls are a meaningful band. So long as Von has bills to pay to support his lifestyle there will always be gigs but don;t patronize the fans by the band 'moving foward' fallacy..

to paraphrase a sisters albums title -SSFFMBRPGTSMF - screw sisters fans for money by repeating past glories to support my lifestyle

Each to their own - Enjoy or Revolt.. I'm in the latter !!

Free Will!

It's a great thing - we go, (Friday night in my case) because we want to (Thank you Billie P).

I had a good time, met some new people, including 10 year old seeing them for the first time.

Go Figure..

These threads inevitably turn into well worn arguments. Nevertheless I will give me two penny worth. There's still something about the Sisters that's not any other band. Something that makes me travel a damn long way. I see other bands that do release new stuff but it ain't the same. There is something about the Sisters. When i hear the good doktor start nothing beats it. Everything has its time though and it will end when :von: gets bored. But til then I will travel when I can, meet old and new friends etc etc.lol and yes have a damn fine time. As an aside the shows in that there London were the best in ages. And i am hard to please. For what it's worth.

Last weekend I saw the Sisters. I probably fit the description of an older fan who's seen them multiple times and would go see them anyway pretty well.

While there I met other people like me.

However I also met people who were seeing them for the first time.

Some of those people were young.

Some had travelled. One girl had travelled from Texas.

To see them.

For the first time.

I think anyone making claims about the Sisters as a live draw and the kind of person who goes to see them had better be able to account for that too.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Well, that does rather count for Greek bootlegs limited to 88 with two tracks from 85, IMHO ... a live concert, by nature, can hardly ever be a reptition ... because it takes two to tango ... ...

just saw the video of wichita lineman cover.

new perspective seems to be, that it might be the last tour. cant see the man pretend to sing much longer. dignity has its limits.

The simpler explanation appears to be that it was an impromptu tribute by Chris (no Ben and no Doktor either) and Von just didn't know the words.
