Lucretia ....LONG V..for Scardy

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Err...I've got this as an official release from 1988, bought at the time so I know it's totally genuine. It came with a plastic disc to clip the 3" CD into so it would play properly (or at all).
Anyway, the reason I mention it is to raise the question: what are people's views on weeding genuine Sisters product? I've noted the comments about sharks on e-bay passing bootlegs off as official releases.

A very, very good question Herr Gripper, unfortunately I don't have an answer. Better ask KewBee :)

hmmm, not really in favour of weeding commercially "available" material.

i know how you define "available" can be rather sketchy, but in this case i'm afraid i couldn't really let it happen... :? we are already treading on dubious ground re: copyright etc. and i wouldn't want to impinge upon any more laws :urff:

I'd agree that it's a complex subject with many angles. I don't think anyone would agree that weeding a new Sisters album  would be acceptable. Nor do I think many would argue about weeding of previous work which wasn't officially 'deleted.' But is this the case because it stops the band earning money, or is it because it's theft of intellectual or artistic property? And is one more important than the other?

If it's a 'property' issue, where does that leave us with regard to unreleased demos and studio outtakes? Some would even argue that boots of gigs are something which the blurb on the back of tickets (re. recording equipment etc) would appear to outlaw, and it could be argued that this is more to do with the 'property' issue than with financial loss.

I don't want to come across as a killjoy here- and yes, in a utopian society everybody would have free access to everything- but I'll back up QB's stance on wanting to keep anything 'official' out of the weeding process. I know that this probably drives some people into the clutches of the e-bay traders but...I suppose at the end of the day we'd have to rely on (for one thing) our sense of conscience.

No simple answers, then!

I wrote a long tirade on the We are working on an album, inter alia, but the matter of single releases is currently on hold.
and lost it!
It was mainly grumbling about the lack of product and them being one of the most bootlegged bands since The Grateful Dead/Hawkwind.

Then may I suggest you all delete whatever software you have for downloading recordings (official or unofficial releases!) and never ever place an ebay bid on something you want It's the same thing, whether I send a copy off or they download it off me or I win it on e-bay, isn't it? (well ebay does involve money!which really is worse, isn't it??????? Oh god....it's been sold!!!   for profit!!! the shock....) I got this off e-bay and a nice chap in Hungary got the proceeds. Andrew didn't get a thing in terms of royalties.

I won a nice out of print vid off ebay..and had it changed from PAL to NTSC so I could actually watch it.   I kept the copy and sent the orginal to someone who could watch a PAL vid and enjoy it. I'm sure someone will tell me how wrong I am to do that, but you know what? I don't care. It's my property and I'll do what I want with it. And if I want to send the original which is no use to me off as a gift I will.

Out of print/deleted items are damn fair game in my book for down load or ebaying! Or just copying. If I could purchase fair and square I would, and probably save myself a hell of a lot of money in the process, but as it is, I can't. So I'll do what I have to, to get what I want.

Love me or hate me for it...That's where I stand.

I didn't realize This was an "official" release, and I'm well aware of QB's rules. Not to fear dear Leader... :von:

I can barely keep up with the weeds I've promised so far... you know who you are and I"m sorry, I've not been to the post office yet. :(

Andrew's not going to get any money from any existing Sisters product is he? At the end of the "relationship" with east-west, didn't they give him a pay-off that was more-or-less ****-off money? I thought Andrew traded them any future royalties for release from the contract? Even if you go into Virgin Megastores and buy Floodland, the only people getting any of the proceeds are the shop and east-west.

So why should east-west profit from the music the Sisters have written and recorded? Copy all you want, BP, and b0ll0cks to it ;)

:o

don't worry

i'm not saying i don't use "hooky" software or anything like that :innocent: just that material that is very obviously an official realease (such as the lucretia cd single) should not be weeded.

you have to least show some pretence at obeying the law ;)

this is of course only a guideline, and not a rule of thumb. there are always exceptions.. see the wake dvd for example.

i havent given it that much thought so far, but if you really need to know then i guess that in my mind the difference between the wake dvd and the lucretia cd single (for example) is that the wake dvd is A) waaaaay out of print, B) a completely different format to the original version, C) someone has spent a lot of time transferring and cleaning it up (and a bloody good job they have done!), and D) it's just too cool not so share! :notworthy:

i'm no expert in copyright law (candover p?) - but most of it is pretty obvious really. all i ask of people is that they just apply some kind of common sense and a decent amount of honesty when they are thinking of offering something for weeding, and i'm pretty sure you will be able to tell in your heart of hearts if weeding it would be really ok or not ok. and if you honestly cannot see a problem with weeding an official release, then just try it... it is unlikely the thread would be around long enough to be seen anyways ;)

i might add that what i honestly believe and what i am prepared to stand up and say to any lawyers that come knocking on heartland's door are not neccessarily the same thing. if you see what i mean.

;)

this one is a general broadcast message aimed at all: please just be fair and honest - don't weed stuff that is obviously copyrighted (even if you cannot buy it new anymore) - i will only delete the thread. and don't make me have to pull the plug on the weeding section altogether by not playing the game fairly.

unsurprisingly, my priorities ultimately lie with the board as a whole, and not the weeding section. if the former is endangered by the latter, then i wouldn't hesitate to pull the plug on it.

end of debate. danke ;) :von:

i would add for the record that yes, the extended version of lucretia is a very, very wonderful thing.

i don't own the cd songle, but i have the 12" and version on "...overbombing".

glorious.

long train is also rather spiffing, but i honestly preferred the 3 and a half minutes of short, sharp shock of the original. ;)
