existing demo recordings

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. hello everybody
although i am into the sisters since the floodland area this is my first post in here.

i am interested in some infos about demos - maybe somebody out there could help a little:

1. floodland: has anybody ever heard (of) any demo tracks beside the common kill the lights/ dominion stuff? especially this corrosion would attract my interest, althoug i haven't ever heard of any tracks beside the mentioned ones.

2. vision thing: afaik no demo tracks have made their way into collectors' circles. has anybody ever heard such demo tracks or the various different takes/versions which have been mentioned by eldritch himself?

sisters demos have influenced the way i listen to the whole sisters stuff enormously. maybe floodland is the only album(collection of tracks) where i prefer the official versions to demo/live material.

i have a promo of this Corrosion with the radio edit on 1 side..and....a verry long version on the other side... i timed it..to check for myself ( there is no info in the record..black label, black cover) and indeed it was longer...

also a different version on the Dominion promo...(short + long)

the lucretia version from the lucretia 12" is also a longer version (at least imho)...nothing special though...
but i do recall hearing a weird version of Lucretia once...have no info bout that i'm afraid..
i don't sleep, so i don't dream, so i don't wake up frightened...
everything is what it seems, if you look hard enough tonight and see...

There are demos of This Corrosion done with the Sisterhood setup, but they are very jealously guarded by those who have them (not me, unfortunately!)

But as archive material they are of interest from the historical perspective of the band's development.

the news about the sisterhood version of this corrosion definitely is good news - although i don't know how long it will take me to get hold of it yet..... - and, who is on vocals? james?

i once read that torch used to be already an old track the time it was released - so i guess that torch was written and recorded first by the sistershood lineup also - ?

dominion: is the version featured on the some boys wander... cd (the doubled intro bars) fake? at least it sounds like one...

Torch was the famous track that Craig refused to play on, precipitating the split in 85.

Always wondered about that one, I have the USA promo of dominion and it isn't the same as the Some Boys track. Does anyone know if the SB version is legit?

I also have a rare demo of The Sisters of Mercy - Cry Little Sister 2004 (Dirty Funker Remix). Who's jealous now? ;D

@ mh: do you have any further details about the famous torch sessions? if torch were around in 85 it might have been part of the sessions including serpents kiss, garden of delight, knocking, emma?

Don't think Serpents Kiss was ever part of that. The instrumental of that one was done at the Slaughterhouse, Driffield.

Nothing beyond what's fairly well known. During the second LP sessions, Von refused to sing Waynes lyrics and Craig refused to play the bassline of Torch. My own feeling is that they would have split shortly after anyway, despite that.

My understanding of it is that the official release of Vision Thing is the demos. The band rejected the more developed studio versions as "over-produced" IIRC.

according to actual track lenght and what is printed on the cd/lp there must have been a change of some trackversions straight before the start of pressing - maybe also causing a change in the production level.

the remix version of wydsm is definitely an improovement over the album version - although on the same production level

i always wondered if the more mixes from 93 were closer to the bands original versions - despite of the chosen names for these mixes they still seem to me a little powerless... a mix combining elements of the album version and the 93 version (and the live version) would have provided the best results i guess.

I never heard anyone call them "Demos". I do recall the phrase "Monitor Mixes", however but can't remember where from...

It does beg the question what the f**k were they doing in PUK for 9 months to eventually go back to these earlier versions?

This is when the relationship with the record company began to break down, exacerbated by the below expectation sales, leading durectly to the release of the two compilations to try and pay for the studio time for Thing. And you wonder why East West weren't pushing the Sisters as hard as they could...?

watching the cricket, sightseeing, sticking pictures of girls from Vogue all round my part of the studio, getting a letter from Joanna Lumley and photocopying it 100 times, playing games on our new Amiga computers, and discovering Tetris on a new thing called a GameBoy, going to Berlin to see Roger Walters perform the Pink Floyd album The Wall and getting really drunk with my friend Kristianne Backer from MTV and then waking up next morning and going for a canal boat ride round the east German part of Berlin in a strange sunshine... and we made a rocking record... even if on the really slow track Andrew had to play the bassline for me cos I just couldn't get it... my lasting vision of those days in Denmark is when Andrew recorded 120 vocal takes of the 9 minute song Vision Thing (and he never credited me with the lyric "another black hole in the killing zone...)... anyway it took Andrew a week just to listen back to the vocals..... and you wonder why it took a year?
