So damn cold (VERY IMPORTANT FIX NEEDED)

For you to give feedback to the Heartland moderators. Wish lists, fault reports, etc. You may get an answer, you may not. As in all things, it largely depends on how nicely you ask the people in charge... You're welcome.

I really like the random featured little lyric thingy on the homepage, but today I saw this and it made me a little itchy - the quote from 9w9 reads "It's so damn cold and it's just not true" ... and that's not the lyric.

Please address as a highest priority.

Big fan of that feature too.

While you're in there, the diversity of the options seems... lacking? I swear I only ever see the same dozen or so. Not that TSOM have a massive back catalogue but it feels like there should be more. This may have changed at the upgrade but I'm not 100% sure?

Maybe the PRNG needs some lube?

Fwiw, the quotes are pulled at random from this file:

random_quotes.txt

I've corrected the 9w9 lyrics btw

I see, clearly it's me with the "just a dozen". I wasn't expecting many duplicates, but that source list is much reduced from the entire canon.

I tried to avoid more than one lyric from each song, and chose the ones which still sounded cool in isolation

Happy to add some more though :)

the way it's supposed to work is:

- it looks how many lines are in the file
- it picks a random number between 1 and that number
- it displays the lyric from that line number in the file

however, if folks aren't seeing a wide range of quotes there's a chance the RNG might not be as R as i hoped

i've shuffled the order of them around in text file so hopefully folks will see some different ones...?

in the meantime i'll do a bit of digging to see if something isn't working quite right

I remember trying to code Math.random functions in Flash (don’t hate me) back when and it would ‘favour’ certain positions. Like if I wanted the payhead to go to a random frame out of 20 it would favour the middle bunch, landing on 1,2,3,18,19,20 less frequently. So I had to weight the frames with duplicates on the edges to rebalance. Fuqing math. Fuqing computers. Just do your job you’re a giant calculator.

Look, I'm sure it was my cognitive bias at fault here, not the PRNG. Don't waste too much time on it.

Am in favour of any effort at expanding the list though. I prefer my PRNG in Dwarf Fortress size rather than backgammon size :)

Agree with mr.pib :bat: :bat:
There are some cool new lyrics in the new songs, like

- there is no us; there's only them
- we had wool and we had steel we had liverpool
- a thousand thousand souls have never seen the sea
- we threw a line, we did not deep it
- I made you cry, I made you mine
- We have love like love We have it simulated
- Show me your pop music Barbie rock and roll
etc

I don't have access to the generator I'm afraid

I don't think I can access it any more either sorry. I seem to have lost the login details. (The credentials have probably changed since I was last in there anyway; I've not logged in since well before the site was upgraded to the new phpBB.)

Sounds like access to the lyric sheet would be as welcome as access to the generator :innocent: ;D

In case it's any help, I took the liberty of adding a few new lyrics and fixing a couple of things... copy/paste into the file when somebody gets access?

Creatures of tinsel and gauze
That's not waving; that is drowning
You have the freedom to be living in a car
Heave away, heave away boys
In a home where we're not real
And when I stand and raise my hand
This can go two ways
With the hammer drawn
Anything but paranoid
If it makes you happy
Slide on the chrome and plastic
Throw away the underclasses
With a third degree in jealousy
Blues and twos because it's Monday
Romance and assassination
Lay me down the long white line
There is no us; there's only them
They were many, we are few
But Genevieve, it's time
Show me stupid on tv
Watched the wonder wander past
Going round and around and around and around
It's just a kiss away
I guess this must be the home of the hitmen
Ich bin hier allein
So still, so dark all over Europe
Another motherfucker in a motorcade
Love for the death and for the defecation
Everything is lost and your trust lies broken
Pink noise, white noise
Take a walk downtown to where the victims go
One more night spent on your mirror
Nine while nine and I'm waiting
So damn cold it's just not true
Make a mess of your conviction
And yes, I believe in what we had
Everybody got a destination
Rationale, rhyme and reason
You reap what you sow
See the wreckage and the damage done
Gimme something fast
For a million empty faces
For a million hollow smiles
Cut a hole between the ground and sky
f**k me and marry me young
It don't help to be one of the chosen
Tunnel vision and the scars to prove it
Into that good night kiss away
I got wrecked out here
Run around in the radiation
Another shade of empty
Lost for stupid again
Set the controls for the heart or the knees
Take a one way ticket to the main attraction
When the water come rushing, rushing in
England fades away in your eyes
Counting the days in the haze around you
I hear the roar of a big machine
This is Babel, sensurround
See a body and a dream of the dead days
Seconds to the drop but it feels like hours
It's just a heartbeat, loud
Forget the many steps to heaven
Here come the marching men
Guns and cars and accidents
Living in films for the sake of Russia
Shake me down again

what don't you like about this? it is the correct first line of the last verse; and is even stated as such in the lyrics section of the official site. :?:
"There's something about what we do that means a lot to people.
And the fact that it means a lot to them means a lot to me.
And thats why i keep on keeping on".

You’re right, and I’d been meaning to come back here to correct myself. I always think of the first “see a body”, and various non-official sources have that repeated, but listening to FALAA the other day I was reminded that it does indeed switch to “see a face”; so, my bad.
