i believe mr quiff took the decision to censor profanities as the level of swearing on hl was causing it to be blocked by some corporate firewalls thus depriving some of the more work-shy members of their favourite waste of time.

i'm sure our lord and master will confirm or deny this later...

That's unfortunate.
This is the only forum I visit that doesn't even allow the censors to be turned off.

Most other php forums I see have the option of using word subsitution.
That can be fun though. For instance, in another forum, we were discussing a certain porn actress named Bella Donna. (I own one of her DVDs, but I didn't even realize it until I visted her website.)

Anyway, I found a filmography for her and posted it. Other members with censors turned on see the F-word substitued with "cuddle," so one of her films was seen as "Little Miss Ass Cuddle."

I thought that was so cuddling precious, I took it as my custom title in my profile there.

Other php forums I've been to have neat features like a spoiler tag for discussing movies and such (you have to mouse over a window to display something that may ruin a movie for you).

For slow days, there's an AI-forum member based on ALICE that will respond to your posts.

One politically-heated forum I know of even has an Ignore list, where, if a member is added to it, he none of their posts will appear for you.
If you try to add yourself to your ignore list, it even gives you the number for a good therapist, based on your location.

PHP can waste your time in ways you've never imagined.

i toyed with the alice bot idea for a while, just to see if any of you would notice, but then threw that idea out coz we got sexygoth ;) :kiss:

might look for a user-based profanity filter on/off mod though! nice idea :)

@ markfiend: guilty as... :innocent: the random lyric thingy on the homepage was an afterthought and doesnt go through the usual board censoring gubbins. also, the rational behind the censoring was more about the sheer number of swear words one might encounter on a thread... i didnt think the bit on the homepage would make much difference.

plus, i couldn't NOT have that lyric could i, really? ;) :notworthy:
