I Will Call You

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

We're at the intersection
With my (calling?)
There's a room out there
All guns, all day

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
I will call you a car

It don't bother changing, baby (?)
It don't matter to me
To rock star, film star
I don't remember the shame

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
I will call you a car

Where the walls are paved with
Silver lining
You're a xxx
Silver ride
You're a xxx
Silver ride

It's only the xxxx
So do I

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
I will call you a car

This is mostly based off the audio from the first night at the Roundhouse in 2021, but I also listened to the audio from 2020 Leeds and Bristol shows too.

“We're at an intersection
We are ??
There's a room in a room outside
All guns, all day

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
I will call you a car

It don't ??
?? all out there ??
Rock star turns ?thug?
And you never really see me

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
Where I’m a star

Silver lined…
Your house of greed.
Silver lined…
Your guilt.
Silver lined…

It’s true, there’s a room out there
Where I ??

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's room in a room out there
I will call you a car"

It sounds to me like he's been singing "There's a room on a road out there" recently, which makes a bit more sense to me than other versions.

Perhaps however not if it's a VR room?

Hello! Signed up ages ago, posted briefly, lurked ever since. Feels a bit weird posting now after being a lurker because I'm more familiar with some of you than you are with me.

Slightly different take on parts of the song here, but I'm quite certain I've cracked the verses, variations notwithstanding.

Verse 1
We're at an intersection
We're on [our/the] way
There's a road out there
All guns, all day
Line 3 changes the most I think: occasionally it's "there's a road ahead", and earlier versions used something like "there's a road outside" instead.

Verse 2
It's all about the jacknife
I don't remember [my/your] name
Truck stop, don't stop
[I/you] won't remember the shame
I'm quite certain that this is correct (Roundhouse 3 might be the clearest evidence), and thematically it certainly fits. I think "jacknife" refers to the truck crash, not the bladed weapon. There's a lot of overlap with these new songs, by design I should imagine. We've got a "carambolage" over in Don't Drive On Ice, and we've got a "jacknife" here. It's all highways and crashes and roads and vehicles and driving. He often flips the first and second person pronouns in this verse.

(I landed on "truck stop" by accident, but it clicked immediately. I originally had it as "drive slow/don't stop" but then I saw one clip that looked/sounded like "trust us, and don't stop" and that made me realise I hadn't quite nailed it. There's some M'era Luna footage that makes "Truck Stop" pretty explicit: he's doing a lot of bellowing on that gig because they're out on a big festival stage on a sunny day, and as a result it gives a few things away, even if the performance is not the finest of the year. Once you hear "truck stop" you can clearly detect it in all renditions of this song, and it aligns with those who were hearing/seeing "drug star".)

Chorus
I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's a room [in/on] a room out there
I will call you a car
Line 3 is usually "room" but I'd be quite comfortable believing that it's been "road" on occasion - I reckon both are right. "Room on a road" would make sense too. The first night of the Roundhouse residency had an alternative last line about "under the stars" in the second chorus.

The Middle 8-type bit
I think that this is somewhat improvised, honestly. Or rather, I think there's a wide variety of lines that get swapped in and out. One of the many joys of a band who resists the idea of recorded versions of songs are the 'definitive' versions of the songs, in my opinion. It's nice that the lyrics are fluid. I think the overall structure though is just:
You [insert line here]
So [do/am/will] I
In some performances (Chania Festival 2022 f'rinstance) the middle 8 appears to be a semi-improvised variation of the 2nd verse instead, and I'm pretty sure I can hear a reference to 'the wheel' in the third line on that occasion, which lends weight to the idea that the most likely lyrics are the ones that fit the road/driving/crashing imagery.

I think the other aspect of this song is the use of the vehicle/truckstop imagery to evoke casual/anonymous/illicit sex etc, and the using/discarding of one's sexual partner after such encounters. Usually our friend from the North uses sex as a metaphor for other things, so I'm not suggesting that the song itself is 'about' sex (or at least, not only about sex), but between "I will call you a car" as a classic morning-after "get out of my house" line, and the truckstop as a classic hookup beat, my theory's got legs.

What do you think?

Great work @Fallon ! I haven't heard the jackknife before but now it makes sense. I just listened to this version and now it really sounds like Von sings the "all about the jackknife" at the "so do I"-part before the last chorus. After listening so much to the new songs I hear a lot of improvisation of lyrics and melodies and agree totally! again, great work! :)
