Don't Drive on Ice

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Ah, somewhat back to topic ... :) ...
LyanvisAberrant wrote: 10 Apr 2022, 12:42 Here's my attempt after listening to the song far too many times.

Won't talk all that much
that's not waving that is drowning
your talk is [target's?] underwater
no sign of any town
wind your window down
can't wind the window down ***
-
Don't drive on ice
Don't mind the other side
Don't drive on ice
You're looking at a world of... (don't drive on ice)
Don't drive on ice
Don't drive on ice (don't drive on ice)
-
It's all electric,
there were sparks and then there weren't
you took the bridge and it is burned
-
Flame on (don't drive on ice)
you're looking at a world of [out the window?] don't drive on ice)
flame on the other side (don't drive on ice)
Etc...
-
(Solo, leading into..)
(chorus)
~
The only new variation in the last chorus is the use of the line:
"You're on the wrong side" instead of one of the previous embelishments.
Slightly torn about the line:
"You're looking at a world of [?]", instead possibly being: "You're looking out the window". I have chosen to go with the former after attempting to lip read.
***Personal note: Absolutely love this bit
Crossreferencing with the Nijmegen performance, does this all seem reasonable?
Looks good ... :) ... meanwhile, the lyrics are becoming ever more concise, I think ... and more impressive in performance where necessary ...

Thank youuuu absolutely, I just wanted something new to sing in the shower
Feel free to chuck em up on the wiki, or fuse the writeouts that we have so far into a more complete picture. It's all so exiting!

My de-mumblifier hears “Your dock is under water”. Potential reference to Hamburg?

To my ears it sounds like "Your looking at a riddle from the wrong side" he's also been singing it in But Genevieve a bit more clearly.

Won't talk around that much
That's not waving that is drowning
Your target's underwater
Outside of any town
Wind the window down
Can't wind the window down

Don't drive on ice
Don't drive on ice
You're looking at a riddle
From the wrong side
Don't drive on ice
Don't drive on ice (don't drive on ice)

It's all electric,
There were sparks and then there weren't
You took the bridge and it is burned

Flame on (don't drive on ice)
You're looking at a riddle
From the wrong side don't drive on ice)
Flame on the other side (don't drive on ice)

Changed the third line to 'Target's' instead of 'Talk is".

Agreed... :D ... I also often hear "target".
I guess it depends on :von:'s mood ... or on the mood of the listener ... :innocent: ...
We won't get legally valid evidence on that ... it's just a messy situation, when no official lyrics
are published as sort of orientation ... ...

in this excellent video from the gig in München the first line sounds like something completely different than "Won't talk that much". in my ears it almost like "_____ round the lodge"? :) anyone else who hear something similar?

Also the "outside of ____ town", it doesnt sound like "any" in my ears.

and on the 2nd chorus I hear something like "you're lurking at a ribbon" :) but Looking makes most sense.

My friend and I joke that he's saying "outside of Andrew town", because it really really does sound like it but like, it can't be? haha

I agree on Andrew town in this Münchenvideo! :) but at other gigs it sure sounds like "any town". Guess it 's Von's kind of humour to change the lyrics a little from gig to gig. :)

Seems we are all lurking at the riddles from the wrongside in Andrewtown.

Long slow carambolage
That’s not waving, that is drowning
Your truck is underwater, outside of any town
Wind the windows down
Can’t wind the windows down
From the wrong side
Don’t drive on ice
Flame on the other side
Don’t drive on ice
You’re looking at a river
Don’t drive on ice
It’s all electric
There were sparks and then there weren’t
You took the bridge and it is burnt

that reminds me another old case of lyrics discussion made here and that led back then at the livenews page update with the lyrics of that song  :bat:

In future all we need to do is post the lyrics in excruciatingly wrong ways, then the official version will appear.

The "not waving it's drowning" is surely a reference to the Stevie Smith war poem: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/ ... t-drowning

By the same token, do you reckon if we posted audio of fans humming Far Parade it might provoke Von into playing it live one day?
