Are there too many music genres?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Seriously, what the fork are all these genres & do we really need them?
Most of them sound made up. Take “time lord rock” for example (yes it’s real). FFS!
Grime is literally rap. But a little bit faster & comes from England. Isn’t German reggae just, well, reggae?
Do people invent these stupid names in an effort so sound a bit cooler or something?
Someone’s even made a forking map & it has almost 1400 different genres on it. Isn’t that a bit ridiculous?

Some band or other on at the Duck & Drake in Leeds advertise themselves as 'playing BOTH types of music, rock AND roll' :lol: assuming that they're wrong, there are in fact three 'types' of music - rock n roll (definitely counts as one), disco/dance and classical. Everything and anything else suggested as a genre is the work of fashion victims. Next they'll be trying to convince us there's more than seven colours. Sigh.

I’ve been in D&D with two bands on at the same time in the two rooms. That was a challenging experience for the ears 🤣🤣

:lol: knowing that place they probably had a pianist on in the middle too. Exquisite pub, up until the forthcoming Sisters tour the closest we've got to being on holiday this year is an afternoon in its beer garden :lol: 8) :notworthy: Charlie was extremely impressed by the fact / realisation as we walked in last Saturday that the front door / entrance doubles up as a main stage :lol: :lol:
