A record by Mancunian band The Smiths has been voted the best song to listen to when you're down.

I Know It's Over topped a poll of tunes which people turn to when they are depressed, broken-hearted or just having a bad day.

Written by Morrissey, the song is taken from the 1986 album The Queen Is Dead.

It begins with the lines: "I can feel the soil falling over my head/And as I climb into an empty bed/Oh well. Enough said."

The Songs That Saved Your Life poll was carried out by BBC radio station 6 Music and voted for by thousands of listeners.

Interesting that Comfortably Numb also made in into the top ten. Allegedly the Floyd version but knowing how cheery goths are I have my doubts ... :innocent:
Loki was never worshiped as the other Gods,
Which is quite understandable.

If I felt depressed, Morrissey's whiney voice is the last thing I'd wanna hear and it'd have me reaching for the pills or pulling the trigger faster than Fast Jack McFast in Fast-town :roll: (or something).

(Sorry to anyone who likes them, but I've never liked them. No need to post huge amounts of replies defending the geezer. I'm sure he's a nice bloke and all but just accept that some people's musical preferences are different to others, ok?) :D

Picked up the taTu version of that recently - very squeaky and quite nasty. Not in a good way.

The CD also featured their Eurovision entry ... which is classic Europop par excellence. Love it :wink:

Would recommend the (now deleted) Ukrainians release "Pizni iz The Smiths". Four covers (Bigmouth, Queen is Dead, Meat is Murder, What Difference ...) done in east European folk stylee. Excellent.

man LOVES to wallow in his own pity. teenagers LIKE being depressed and alienated. sometimes it's good FUN to be really grumpy all day. when you're down, you want someone who's down with you (not some cheerful pappy nonsense).

I can supply adages for all occasions. bar mitvah jokes, anyone?

Hmm. Yeh well teenagers are weird. If I'm feeling down I listen to some happy bouncy music to lift my mood. I find your mood is influenced my the music you listen to (which is why I don't listen to rap any more, as it makes me wanna go and do a drive-by.)

My boyfriend has always sworn by Black Sabbath's "Killing yourself to live"........for various reasons.....
I listen to The Smiths (their melancholyI find quite uplifting!), or I bop around to Midnight Configuration!!!!!!!!!

For me, it's about finding comfort in the knowledge that *someone else* has/had been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, you know? Knowing that you're not utterly alone in your misery really helps, sometimes... :von:
