I Will Call You

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Still think it's about Musk, Tesla and Spaceforce X. With a bit of AI thrown in for good measure
That's an intriguing take actually, the rocketship line I suppose is the key one.

Google just informed me that the recently-released "Tesla Semi" is promoted on the basis of its anti-jackknife technology...

Verse 1

Line 3 changes the most I think: occasionally it's "there's a road ahead", and earlier versions used something like "there's a road outside" instead.

Verse 2
It's all about the jacknife
I don't remember [my/your] name
Truck stop, don't stop
[I/you] won't remember the shame
I'm quite certain that this is correct (Roundhouse 3 might be the clearest evidence), and thematically it certainly fits. I think "jacknife" refers to the truck crash, not the bladed weapon. There's a lot of overlap with these new songs, by design I should imagine. We've got a "carambolage" over in Don't Drive On Ice, and we've got a "jacknife" here. It's all highways and crashes and roads and vehicles and driving. He often flips the first and second person pronouns in this verse.

...

Chorus
I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's a room [in/on] a room out there
I will call you a car
...

The first night of the Roundhouse residency had an alternative last line about "under the stars" in the second chorus.

The Middle 8-type bit
I think that this is somewhat improvised, honestly. Or rather, I think there's a wide variety of lines that get swapped in and out.

...
You [insert line here]
So [do/am/will] I
...
For those playing along at home, as obsessively keen on getting the lyrics for this one nailed down as I am, Verse 2 was almost certainly "Truck stop/Slow drop" in the first show of the 2023 US tour in Maryland.

In this video from LA I hear "don't stop" and not "slow drop" but I'm quite familiar with Andrew's way of altering the lyrics. :) Really clear lyrics in this video:

We're at an intersection
We're on the way
There's a road out there
All guns, all day

I will call you a rocket ship
I will call you from afar
There's a room in a room out there
I will call you a car

It's all about the jacknife
I don't remember the name
Truck stop, don't stop
I don't remember the shame

?
So do I
?
So do I

It's really annoying with the mumbling in the bridge... what is he singing??? :)

I think there's one version in which one of those bridge lines is "you're here with me/so am I" but I'm still convinced that there's a bunch of different lines that get swapped in and out.

Doesn't quite sound like "room" to me.... the "m" seems to be missing. Road maybe? Role?

Edit: Oh well, on the last chorus it does sound like "room".

I'm now quite certain from this video:

...that the second line of the bridge is "Some kind of automatic silver line".

The first line is still very much something that ends with "so do I".

So there you have it - more transit imagery, and something approaching confirmation that both the "so do I" crowd and the "silver line" crowd are correct.

here's the bridge from last night

I hear
you're on the tracks, so am I
some kind of [automatic silver line?]
Do you remember a time when angels... do you remember a time when fear?
In the days when I was stronger, in the days when you were here?

Brilliant. Another Eldritch banger of the post-2019 period. Absolute density and ambiguity of reference. "I will call you a car... you're a Buick", lol.
"We're Hawkwind and this is a song about love."

I laughed out loud when I figured it out, it's pretty funny. Classic Eldritch.

The "Silver Lined" lyric seems to change a lot, "So do I" or "Silver ride" seem interchangeable/equally plausible.

Amazing job! I will adjust the lyrics when I try to sing along at the concerts
