I don't have words to describe the images that i saw about the attack today in Atocha (one of the most beautiful train stations that i ever been).
For all the spanish ppl in this site: I hope that you and your family and friends are ok. Wish you the best in this horrible time.
terror in madrid
I left home at 7.30 this morning so didn't hear about it until 09.00 when I walked in the office. One of my closest friends is on a sabatical from Sunderland Uni and living and working in Madrid for a year. He was running late this morning, missed his normal train and caught a bus instead. He was approx 400m from Atocha when it happened. I spoke to him about 10mins ago and he and his wife are OK but obviously shocked and stunned. Difficult times for all involved and I'm sure our HL thoughts are with them.

I heard when I got up for work today. It's really scary how vulnerable public transportation really is to such acts. Unfortunately for me, it's how I get to and from work ...

The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

You know, it would be a shame if terrorism led us to desert public institutions (like public transport), and live in our little private bubbles. I can see why people worry, but I'm not sure if public transport is any more or less dangerous than private transport, although we all feel safer in our cars, as Gary Numan said. Terrorists attack train stations because they are crowded with people, not because they are more or less defenceless than houses or cars. The idea of public space is worth fighting for, and I think that living the life you want to live, as normal, is the only decent response to terror like this.
