Quantum Baby

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Also am i going crazy, or did it sound like there were kai backing vox in the first, 30 second clip posted? Seems now a solely Von vocals song, which I'm absolutely not opposed to. Maybe they're still allowing some time for Von to finalise lyric placement before singing along. Just a theory :)

I don't suppose anyone can share a passable attempt at the guitar tab?

Do you have guitar pro or a midi reader? I'm halfway through transcribing all the tracks of the song (drums, bass, choir, piano, guitar 1 and 2).
I can send you the file once Im finished.

unfortunately not - if there's any way you can export to plain text or screenshot that would be great, otherwise no problem

Yeah that can be arranged.
I finished transcribing it, do you need any parts and/or instruments in particular?

Probably a reference to Oppenheimer.
This is a clear reference to nuclear holocaust from bombs fall all over the places.

I was just listening to it and realized that with proper recording this could make an outstanding Bond theme song.

Sorry folks, a bit late to the party here.

Hats off to everyone who’s untangled this so far, better ears than mine.

The first line of the chorus has an extra two beats that seem to cause a lot of confusion, and Von doesn’t yet seem to be sure what he’s going to do with them to make it scan. Like Eighthcircle, I do think it’s ‘We have the glory of a thousand suns’ (no harbours), plus some extra fill somewhere on the line – we’ve had a double pause, ‘of a, of a’ as a repeat and an extra mumble between ‘thousand’ and ‘suns’ (no idea what word Von’s using, could be splendid, blazing, golden, anything with a similar rhythm).

So I suggest the following for the whole song:

I love you like I loved you yesterday
I don't know you I believe you anyway
We're entangled but the circle weaves away
You're a little quantum, baby.…
But hey

We have the glory of a [pause pause] thousand suns
And one and one is only one
Fade into the one

We are this but we are not
I will not I miss what we have got
We are made of stardust
I bear the scars
We are made of stars

We have the glory of a, of a thousand suns
And one and one is only one
Fade into the one

We have the glory of a thousand [mumble] suns
And one and one is only one
Fade into the one

As a physicist, it’s a really intriguing song – plenty of beautiful poetic images of indeterminacy, uncertainty, superposition of states, entanglement, wavefunction collapse etc. It aches with yearning - the supernova/stardust pair, but with the typically Eldritch ambiguity of the Oppenheimer atom bomb link others have pointed out. And an absolute banger obviously. I love it. More please!

Cheers,
S.

Kidding, I reckon yours above is a good take.

I think it's about dementia, and a relationship that declines with one/both peoples' memories. I think it switches between the voices of the lovers.

There's a lover who can't remember why or how or when they loved "you", and who literally "won't miss" it, because they won't remember it.

Two people are entangled but the circle waves away, and their entangled threads are being becoming the warp and the weft - gradually these intertwined threads will be at cross purposes with one another.

I think that "quantum" is meant in the literal sense - ie, the smallest physical amount of something: this love (and this person's self and personality) is shrinking and reducing, and at some point it will reduce to a single final quantum, before it disappears forever. The lover is going a little bit quantum in the sense that their mind is gradually dismantling, piece by piece.

I think that the stuff around Oppenheimer is more indirect and oblique (and honestly, I don't imagine Eldritch finds Nolan films that interesting, though i may be projecting): I think he's drawing a metaphorical connection between wave function collapse and memory collapse. I think the reference to 'weaving' - that being a process by which threads are made into a flat plane- may also be a part of this.

I suspect that someone known to Eldritch is losing, or has lost, their memory, and I think he's saying "yes but the love and multitudes which this person held within them were so deep and vast in their reach, that if it really were possible to measure such things, then the cruel dismantling of their consciousness, piece-by-piece, ought to have been like splitting the atom: a bright and beautiful nuclear explosion is all that could possibly express the full extent of this person's glory".

Regardless of whether or not the song itself is about dementia, that's a pretty beautiful way of capturing the essence of the condition. I look after folk living with dementia for a living and on a daily basis I try and fail to express to the people and their families (and my colleagues) exactly this, just nowhere near as eloquently or effectively.

There have been worse first posts! Welcome to Heartland :hl: and whilst we are here, welcome also to esf, I wouldn't be worrying too much about any historical squabbles between Dominion and here, I doubt anyone really cares anymore, nor should they.
