It's all a bit silly. The well-established reason is that the way the band operates is the way they feel works best for them. Given what they have achieved over this time, who's to say they're wrong? No need for theories, essays or dissertations beyond that.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
