Hi from a new recruit!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Hi all, I've only just found this site so I'd like to say Hi from me! I'm Lin and I live in Portsmouth.

My love of TSOM goes way back to the Eighties, I'm not sure what the average forumites age is, but I'm, er, the same age as Andrew!

My friends have now got dodgy knees, hips, backs, and various other excuses for not going to gigs anymore, so I hope I can meet up with some of you at the Roundhouse, as I'll be on my own.

Back in the day I was also a fan of New Model Army, and Spear of Destiny, and I was always (and will always be) massively in love with David Bowie!

If anyone finds themselves in the Portsmouth area (head for the affluent South, then go past it a bit until your feet get wet!) you'll be very welcome, come and say hello!

Thanks for the great welcome and I can't wait for May! It's nice to see there are some fellow southerners too. Let's hope for a TSOM show down here one day, perhaps at Victorious or BIC!

I'm not entirely sure tbh, cos they both say standing, I figured level 1 must be floor and level 2 must be the gallery seating area. Checking my tickets I booked us level 1, presumably on the presumption that that's the floor. The fact that the roundhouse booking page says level 2 'standing' leaves me baffled and typing a frankly useless reply, oopsie soz! ;D :innocent:

Somewhere or other on the internet, probably in the Sharing section here, there'll be a scan of the issue of Underneath The Rock which reprints that very interview / full article (written by Von, unedited by the Rolling Stone editors) available for you to read :D just don't ask me where, precisely, cos I don't know. But it's there!

Thanks for letting me know! I think I'll get there one way or the other :D these are the things we people should read! ;) Somewhere deep on TSOM's official website I managed to find infomation that Von was correspoding with William Gibson - if they happen to publish the letters, I'm here ready to get a hold of them ;D

In case you haven't found it (or looked!) yet, here is the link to the page in the sharing section. Still a bit of research and digging to be done, some other wise soul might be able to pinpoint the exact issue you're looking for?

Hi eastmidswhizzkid and thank you for your welcome!
I was just thinking this afternoon (it occasionally happens) and I wondered, has Von ever considered writing a book? Or has he written one and no-one told me?! With his amazing way with words and languages I would have thought he'd have produced something in print, whether fiction or non-fiction.

Hello Lin and welcome from another long time Sisters fan who was lurking around these pages for years and just joined not that long ago :D I too am a massive David Bowie fan since the mid 1980s, was blessed to see him a couple of times and I miss him terribly to this day; he's always been and still is a great influence on me. I'll be coming from across the Atlantic on my own to the Roundhouse shows in May, so we'll definitely be saying hello and comparing notes on DB, etc. :D

How did I miss this bit of information? Two of my musical/literary heroes corresponding... I would love to read those letters myself too :) I was lucky enough to get to talk to WG at an event he was part of at a library in Toronto promoting his book of non-fiction writing years ago; he's a fascinating man with a keen eye and intelligence for what's going on under our noses, no doubt.

I've just had a look and it's on their site and it was mentioned in the Virgin.Net interview in May 1997: https://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/ge ... ettext.htm
William and I haven't really talked about the Internet; we've tended to correspond more by fax and letter. I suppose that's a judgement by default.

I don't have any sites to recommend. I recommend that people join libraries, or - better still - buy books and thereby encourage others to write them. Others like William, who is Really Rather Good. I thought "Idoru" was easily his best book yet. Go out and buy it (says the man with a free copy).
:von:

And that's so cool you met him! And I guess, two intelligent guys writing letters to each other - that would be an inspiring read for sure (I think ;D)

Also, you saw David!!! That's truly amazing, you're a lucky one :D

Thanks for pointing this out :) I'm pretty sure I saw this back in the day because I used to read anything I could find like this back then, but of course, I've had so much information coming into my head for an entire lifetime that this got pushed out! I've loved all his books, re-read a couple of them when I've had the chance to get new insights into them, and I'm looking forward to "Jackpot" coming out when it comes. Re: David, he was amazing and I was lucky to see him, given that after the very last time, he dropped out of sight nearly for good, at least for touring. Cherish these people while they're still here and working!

Not that i know of, however if he had i wouldnt imagine he would publish under his stage name especially for anything non-fiction or 'high-brow'. i think/know he's behind /been involved with a quite a few creative things that arent widely connected with or attributed to him.
