Following Vision Thing 91-94

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I never said "make a goth album". I said make an album that could be marketed to goths. That whole alternative/industrial thing that was going on at that time was one of about six pre-defined MTV market segments into which all bands seemed to be square-pegged into, regardless of how they sounded or how connected to that particular "scene" they were. Do you guys not remember this?
What I remember of 1994 was Grunge in the US along with stuff like Pavement, and "Britpop" here in the UK with Oasis, Pulp and Blur. I'm not sure why a record label would be pushing a Goff agenda back then. Marilyn Manson pushing the Goff look wasn't until 1996.
They'd be more likely trying to put Von in a flannel shirt rather than black bondage gear.
Exactly this. The Sisters in 1994 would have been well out of place, even among the Lollapalooza crowd. Von putting the Sisters on hiatus for that year and the next would have been the best thing he could have done.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

She's A Monster was plagiarised? From what?
Can someone fill in the details, I have no clue what that's about, I just searched and found nothing useful.

Is this theory established fact? That they dropped She's a Monster because of similiarities to this? I'd be really surprised. They don't sound similar enough to me for there to be a major issue. I'd be really really surprised if She's a Monster was plagiarisd, certainly not consciously. Of course s**t happens, and someone can have a niggling feeling that the song they've just wrote sounds a bit familiar without being able to place where it comes from. But there was no motivation or need to rip off a song - they wrote a load of great songs around that time.

I could kind of understand if some similiarity was pointed out after the fact and they decided to drop it, but did that actually happen? I don't remember reading anything about that. Also the youtube link above has less than 2K views in seven years, MrBlondie's youtube video of the only time the Sisters played SAM is at 16K views. It's also much much better, so there's also that. It's also still listed on the official site (not that it gets updated all that regularly). I think if they wanted to keep playing it, they could have fronted this out.

Anyone able to be definitive about this?

Nah nothing confirmed just general s**t.
More reliable sources will say that Dylan was kicked for punching a staff member (a guitar tech if memory serves me well), and SAM is out of rotation as Von isn't happy with the lyrics right now.

Now back to speculation land:

If you breakdown both songs sections they do line up very well, chorus and all, supposing this was ripped off - accidentally or not - I'm pretty sure that would also result in Dylan getting sacked.

Von stated time and time again that he isn't composing lately, just fitting his poems and notes into songs that his guitarists are bringing in.

He also stated circa 2022 that Dylan was a great composer always bringing new stuff.

My personal take is that no, this wasn't the reason why Dylan got the boot at all, and that the girls are actively avoiding the song as themselves can't vouch for its originality.

Originality is a funny word here though, Miazma is essentially a sisters love letter, with dozens of songs with the same name, lifted chords progressions etc etc.

Can't read his mind, but he made a thing about mentioning Michael Stipe. Around the time, he looked into booking shows in Germany with only the Doc backing him. Talked about his new wonky jazz-nonsense piece, called New World Order.

So he may have had a new thing mapped out. Only the label told him they won't back that, as TSOM or as a solo act. We may have dodged a bullet, there. The end result could've been bewildering like Metal Machine Music, or just cringy, like Rob Halford's band Two.
