No more short songs, short-arse

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

First of all, I apologise for starting so many topics recently. this'll be my last one for a while. Maybe.

A funny thing about the new songs written post- Under the Gun is how short and simple they are.
Take 'We are the same, Suzanne' for example:

counting the days in the haze around you
Susanne on the wall

no pain, summer rain
I'm lost for stupid again
we are the same
give it a name Susanne

counting the days in the haze around you
Susanne let the ether fall
out of phase, I am all around you
Susanne on the wall

no pain, summer rain
I'm lost for stupid again
we are the same
give it a name Susanne

I mean, there's nowt wrong with the words (they're actually rather lovely), but what happened to the days of writing songs like 'Flood (1 + 2)' and 'Driven like the snow?'
Epic, complex, swirling poetry full of references to poems, singers and films. You could never tell quite what Von was banging on about, and yet... his songs ALWAYS made sense!
Frankly, the chilling, esoteric lyrics were a large part of the Sister's appeal for me, and it's a crying shame that he now writes such short, simple lyrics these days.

I'm sure Von would justify this by claiming that he's 'evolved', or some other similar boll*cks. The simple fact is, he's just got LAZY. this also ties in with his 'My Bloody Valentine'-esque lack of productivity generally.

discuss.

Lazy. Definitely. Unfortunate for us, but there it is.
The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

Maybe he's happy. Or strung out. The former, hopefully.
Go to sleep now, Francis.

it's in some way weird to talk about a man's approach to work without the man himself, but...
he used to change the character of the band (lineup, sound,...) with success - maybe anytime (also) artistic stagnacy was close to raise.

i believe its time for a significant change to raise the spirit again - many many possibilities to bringing back confidence, maybe even communicating with the fanbase.
it also could be possible that his voice really got damaged at least - which i hope is not the case but might be affecting the whole sisters-administration.
as i said, its about attitude - i really got shocked a little when i heard the bbc interview last april - showing a man not enjoying a single minute, more an act of defence

again: death to the sisters / long live the sisters!
love is just a shot away

Not necessarily 'simple'! Familiarising yourself with some Alain Robbe-Grillet might help you understand where he's at with his lyric writing these days. ...

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that  I've just finished Jealousy, and it's true that reading the new songs in that fashion makes for another level. Crafty bugger :von:

The Robbe-Grillet is most obvious on 'Romeo Down' and 'Will I Dream?'

Thinking on it, I think 'Detonation Boulevard' has echoes of 'Recollections of the Golden Triangle'. Hmm. Yeah.

I was going to add to this debate in a logical and hopefully useful manner,
but truth be told, I have lost the will to post!

Frankly, who cares anymore? Certainly not Eldritch.
Life is a finite resource, and it is rather sad to see how many (myself included)
are wasting it here in pointless speculation.

Gonna do something less boring instead...
