Yesterday i dug up the original version of Velvet Underground's Sister Ray, and was quite surprised at how "hippie" the song was...likeable, but distinctly hippie...rather like the Doors, who aren't all that bad but are most of the time a bit too hippiesh for me. (This proves nothing though, coz Stones' "Gimme Shelter" is also quite hippie but Sisters playing it, it sounds like original Sisters song.
And as luck would have it, today i received Rothenburg -98 gig (thanks to Tim), and read the review of it from Tours-site, and someone there suggested that Sisters covered rather Suicide's cover of Sister Ray, "Mr. Ray" or "Sister Ray Says". So, today i unearthed that one, and must say it bears more similarity with Sisters' version than VU's original. And i have a funny feeling Von was a Suicide fan?
Anyway, have the Sisters ever commented on Sister Ray where they got it from?

Ahh, i never knew that, but a quick look on the web revealed that indeed Suicide have a song called "Ghostrider". That song always baffled me, too, cause it was only once that, i forget which gig it was, either late -84 or -85, i noticed Sisters actually playing a riff that resembled a song called "Ghostriders" i know, and their version of it doesn't seem to have much in common with that riff/song at all. Well now at least there is a direct link with Sisters and Suicide.

I have the Suicide CD (imaginatively titled "Suicide") that has Ghostrider on it. It is recognisably the same song, with the same riff (although done on keyboard) and similar drum-machine pattern.

i've read about a million insterviews with von where he describes his love of suicide. "and the stooges. everyone loves the stooges" was the usual follow-up.
its a pretty well documented thing
also read that the idea of the star behind the head on the MR logo was influenced by suicide's "red star" artwork from the first album (as was sigue sigue sputnik's star & SSS logo, and most of sputnik's career in fact!)

When I taped Still, borrowed from a library (for home and personal use only) I left that one out. Found it rather repetative, wasn't it a full album side's length?

Nah it ain't. It's about 7/8 mins of side 2, that's all. The VU's original is most of an entire side though.
And yeh - hypnotic, not repetitive, although I'm conditioned to accept both from listening to Spacemen 3.
