To pick or not to pick

Yup

Picking stops you from playing anything too fancy and looking like a smart arse!

Also it's much easier to play 8 to the bar bass and the sound is consistant.

But you need to stick in a slap now and again just to show that you can

i use a pick. a very thick, very hard pick. kinda like a bit of two by four ;)

But if we are talking about the bass - I pretty much agree with Eddie Rhomboidy - a bit of both is the order of the day. The pick definitely allows for better thrashing along with a consistent volume which is sometimes what you need - but picking allows the bass to become more of an instrument and less of a backing vibe.

<plug>As a salient example of such things I would recommend looking out for the imminent Grinn album 'Bubblegum and Machine Guns' which will demonstrate the correct use of the pick/slap mix</plug>;-)

Plectrum is more the traditional style (Doesn't that fellow who used to be in the Beatles play with a plectrum?) as well as thumbing the string

Fingers, slapping and popping came later.

Most 'great' bass players with use all styles.

Lemmy is a confirmed plectrum man, and he's one of the finest bass players ever.

He's not convinced. Held the Muse man up as a shining example. I have to admit, he has a long lost yet strangely familiar obsequious disposition. Sunsets is the riddle man.
