substitute for sisters

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Since we've had no new sisters record in a VERY long time, it feels like something essential is missing in life. What do you people fill this emptiness with? I have found that the finnish gothic rock band "HIM" is really really good. Now I only have to listen to "Floodland" once a week, not every other day like before. Thank you HIM!

Only been on HL for a year claws so I mainly listen to weeds from various Heartlanders. I do listen to other stuff, right now Free - Live! remaster. Quality! :D

him? cock rock with an eyeliner-wearing pretty boy singing? but the lyrics are awful. worse than hussey's. 6th form poetry at best...

and the merry thoughts? a nice idea, but sisters-lite? no thanks. they have none of the whit or intelligence of the sisters... granted they have a very convincing drum machine, but hmmm :urff: the guitars are lacking the balls of the sisters' and having a bloke that whines and moans like von isn't always enough to cover the fact that their songs are average, their lyrics are meaningless tosh and their entire career is based on someone else's cool.

there is no substitute for the sisters. you either have the sisters or you have a different band.

try the chameleons if you're that bored ;)

and if you really fancy a bit of culture try the stooges, or suicide, or even the rolling stones.

in fact just try anyone that the sisters were influenced by, rather than bands that were influenced by the sisters. they will always have more credibility and greater longevity... and less darkling tendencies ;)

Suicide. Ahhh, I feel warm now.

Besides QBs holy triumverate, you could do worse than Leftfield. Techno rock with tunes and intelligience, anyone?

Although they operate on a distinctly Von-esque timescale.

Thing is..... I am in a band and I like to think that even though we are a Dutch band..... our lyrics are more mature than the lyrics included in your average HIM song... I could be terribly wrong but I am taking the risk....come see us live!

How The Chameleons were never f***ing stars, is beyond me.

It all sounded fine to me QB, if you ask the core members of Yes who their influences are, they always say: The Beatles, Tamla Motown and some Frank Zappa. They sound nothing like them but it influences them.
Absorb and mutate would seem to be the way to go.

Or, and here's a novel idea, why not try a different music genre entirely. I've never understood why people feel like the can only listen to g*th, or metallers only listen to metal, or whatever. There's a whole world of music out there, why not explore a little.

I ran across this band called ANGL. Dunno if they're German. Found them on GarageBand. One or two songs are eerily reminiscent of Von & Sisters. Not in the usual cheesy, Rosetta Stone way, though. Interested to see what anyone else thinks...

Hey... Funhouse. Aren't they from, like, Nybro? I remember them well. Bought a single a long time ago called Rain or tears. I wonder if I still have it.

@Claws:
Don't listen to QB Claws. I happen to really really like HIM. Razorblade Romance once daily. Lyrics may not be top notch, but the sound is great! And so What about his eyeliner and pretty boy face QB ...It's yummy.

More @ QB:
As for The Merry Thoughts QB , imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I really really like them. A lot. And the lyrics are not bad at all. Not exactly Von's style but they do stand up for me. And I sort of like the vocals.....Sounds like someone I know.....

sorry bp, but i really must disagree with you on TMT

they sound too much like "someone i know", but without any of the charm or character.

they are just too studied, too perfect. "marvin" is trying so hard that he can never yell, scream or howl like von. he can never cut loose with his voice because then *gasp* *shock* he probably wouldn't sound like eldritch anymore

and i'm sorry but "marvin arkham"? arkham is a place from lovecraft's novels, and lovecraft always used the word "eldritch". sorry, but its bordering on the scary how much that sad f**k has tried to model himself on our fearless leader...

regardless of all that, the worst thing has to be the production on their stuff. the guitars sound so thin and lacking in balls, and his voice is so restrained and studied, his words so over-pronounced (i gather he speaks perfect american-english, which for a german is quite amusing) that the ens result just isn't utterly bastard groovy. not by a long chalk...

when it comes down to it, they just aren't being themselves. they are copying some post-floodland pre-VT sisters sound.

at least bands like rosetta stone etc found their own take on the sisters sound...

The thing that gets me about TMT is that, yes, "Marvin Arkham" does his tonight, Matthew, I'm going to be Andrew Eldritch thing quite well, but if you're going to be studied copyists to that degree, you need the music to sound right too. The keyboard parts in TMT's stuff don't really sound like any Sisters keyboard/sequencer parts, and the guitars... well, I think Quiffy's being kind about the guitars

And the thing that Andy said on the photogallery here:
AndyTheGoth wrote:I am ashamed to say I said "Thanks for carrying on where The Sisters left off.....). As you can guess he was NOT best pleased, and stalked off in a huff!
WHAT? How can he possibly deny any link to the Sisters? For feck's sake, the woman in the fecking photograph (and presumably in the fecking band) is wearing a fecking St Pauli T-shirt! It defies belief!

*breathe* OK, rant over.

Now Rosetta Stone... :notworthy: What a great bunch of lads they were. I remember them playing in The Phono in Leeds ages ago. I believe it was then (or it may have been one of the other times I've seen them) that someone I knew went up to Porl and said "d'you want to buy some speed?"

Porl just turned round, stared at him for about five seconds, chewing his gum, said "Err... no." and stalked off. :notworthy:
