I've been here before, but if you reduce any human activity to its basics, the end result is absurdity. Why bother stretching pieces of string over some wood and plucking them? Why scrawl symbolic squiggles on a piece of paper, or daub a canvas with varied colours? And who the hell thinks drinking the mouldy juices of vegetables is a good way of spending an evening?Burn wrote:andymackem wrote:Nonsense. Get yourself up to Chelmsford on a warm summer's afternoon and enjoy the thwack of willow on leather. Wait til they play Durham and I'll even shout for the beers.Burn wrote:
Ahh Cricket...
not a game that i have cause to follow in Essex...
As for numbers, I could be nine while nine, or I could be seven of nine. But I'd probably be 1973 for preference.
Chelmsford?...you mean that they play cricket there too??
i just don't see the fasination of watching grown men wearing virginal white throwing balls at eachother...
almost as boring as baseball...and thankfully we don't have baseball on UK TV
As for baseball, apart from being a one-time registered official with the British Baseball Federation (really, I can prove it if I really have to), you can find it on UKTV. Channel Five have it in the wee small hours of the morning. If you're not interested you won't be converted, but it is there. I can find you Essex-based American Football if you want to be bored by that as well
Names are just a souvenir ...

The magnificent game!
and no one played it better in the 90s (or now, for that matter) than the New York Giants

@ Burn and Barman Blast:
The Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970's as coached by Chuck Noll were by far the best of the best in american football. Four 4 count them Super Bowl Championships. Two o f them back to back. The offensive line of quarterback Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swan, John Stallworth in at wide reciever...was fantastic.
Add running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Blier..and they were not to be toyed with. Their game was both rushing and passing and..
The defensive line...Jack Ham, Jack Lambert and Mean Joe Greene were fecking awesome.
Playoff games with the Raiders and Houston Oilers were blood baths, as those bastards cheated, but cheating aside they could not beat the Steelers. Nor could Dallas
or the Vikings in those wonderful superbowl match ups.
In the 1970's real men played football and the team to contend with was the Steelers!
Football today is far too full of whining babies who wont' play hurt, won't go all out. None of them can ever match the Iron Curtain of the Steelers.
End of your lessons for today boys.
