The Banshee - Manchester

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Hi Everyone,

Noticed on J.D site that QB was master & servant (DJ) @ this venue.

this brought back many great memores from my goth days.

Anyone else who went there & to other venues:-

The Ritz (Monday)
42nd Street (Tuesday)
Legends (Thursday)
Berlin (Friday)
Cloud Nine (Saturday)

+ devilles, placemate 7, Rotters etc.

Rise & Reverberate

I'm perhaps a tad too young for some of those venues (I've never even heard of the Banshee), But nearly every monday night for 3 years (96-99) I went to 'student night' at the Ritz.

Oh, the memories! beer was a quid for a bottle of holsten pills (sometimes certain bottles were 50p!)- I could have a top night out for under a tenner!
I'd be too nervous/self-conscious to dance, until anout half one when 'Temple of Love' came on, and I'd force myself onto the dancefloor to shuffle about like a wierdo.

I'd always end the night with a donner kebab from 'Monsoons' on Oxford road. mmm, I could go for one of those right now...

I also once went to 'Berlins'. top place.

Yeah I know the Banshee. And I'm led to believe that the Banshee knows me. Clicky for mine and QB's discussion on the matter.

ahhh, the banshee.

bless it :)

myself and sam donut are old hands down there. sam worked behind teh bar for a time, and i did a wee spot behind the decks on a "80s" night (think strawberry switchblade & sigue sigue sputnik back-to-back  ) that ran for a while...

my dj stint was towards the end of its original incarnation down on oxford street, and i think sam's stink behind the bar was during its second phase (underneath the halfords shop, piccadilly gardens)

from your list i also used to frequent:

The Ritz (Monday)
42nd Street (Tuesday)
Legends (aka 5th Avenue) (Thursday) (with a wee jaunt over to the banshee at about 11.30 when the pissed up baggy manc kids came in)

you were always guaranteed a stack of chameleons at legends 8) ;D

it was. ;D

along with leeds' "phono" and liverpool's "planet x" during the mid/late 80s & early 90s it was one of the best goth clubs in the north - certainly a damn site better than anything around now :(

sisters, march violets, ghost dance, bauhaus, sex gang children, specimen, alien sex fiend, yadda yadda yadda. tunes by all the big goth bands and more, spun regularly alongside other more esoteric stuff like radical dance faction, the poppies, rev co, 242 etc etc etc. and wall-to-wall goths, grebos & punks.

very f*cking cool and very f*cking wonderful.

*sigh*

feeling all wistful now :|

Ha! My "stink" behind the bar? Oof!

;D

I was behind the bar at Oxford Road Banshee too! Snooker room on Thursdays and back bar on Saturdays. I also stocked the bar during the day! I actually painted the place, and sound proofed the ceiling when it moved to PicadillY!

I didn't even know it HAD moved to Picadilly. Oxford Rd was ace - loads of little corridors that went nowhere (not counting the fondling goths that hid there). I walked past it a few years back, having left home for Leeds ages ago, to discover it had been bulldozed, whilst the buildings surrounding it were still intact.

Went to Planet X once - Floorshow started as I wandered in - nice start. Unfortunately located (ie Liverpool) for any repeat visits though.

And before that, it wer' all fields.
