Sisters mini/secret gigs

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Hello again. was wondering if any of you 'orrible lot had the fortune/cash/connections to attend any of the 'extra special' Sisters gigs that have happened over the last few years?

I'm talking about stuff like:
1991 Gig in Fanclub Member's house
1996 warmup gig at the Fenton in Leeds (only 100 people there, apparently!)
1997 (or any other year) gig as Near Meth Experience
2001 York college gig

If so, how did you know about the gig in advance? and what was it like to see the band in such intimate surroundings?

It must be the coolest thing ever to be heading off to a secret/warm-up gig!

And just WHO WAS the lucky fan who enticed Von over to Germany in 1991? has he/she ever posted on this site?

Thanks in advance

I think the Near Meth gigs were posted on Dominion at the time. The German gig in the front room was a competition winner - wasn't it? Listening to the A'dam '03 gig - it wouldn't 've gone amiss to do a warm-up of some sort.

I've seen pics of it somewhere, fairly decent sized, but can't remember where now though

I was at the York one in 2001.
Wolfie from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry told me.
One of my fave gigs too. :D

I was at both the Fenton and the Joseph's Well one.

At the Fenton I was stood at the very front and now have documentary evidence (in the form of a highly blown-up photograph) of me lighting Mr. E's fag, which I was doing periodically (sycophantic swine that I am!)

If you're all REALLY lucky you can touch my robe ;)

My favourite memory of that is Von thanking my friend Rik and I for singing the backing vocals to This Corrosion. I was in heaven for about three milliseconds (rather like nitrate then.)

I have striven ever afterwards to recreate the effect by trying to persuade Smurphs audiences to do 5-part harmony. So far the effect has been rather less than stunning. Still, as they say, "never go back."
Very little of what you believe to be true is actually the case.

Sorry.

fenton '96: check
jo's well '97: check
york '01: check

do i win a prize?

fenton was an eye-opener in that i found the sisters to be a great live band despite being eternally ambivalent about their recorded output.

jo's well i don't really recall due to somebody (you know who you are) insisting on getting to the venue at about two in the afternoon and attempting to drink the bar dry before the band even turned up.

york. yummy cakes. and i'm still wearing the t-shirt despite (or maybe because) it being somewhat pink.

Missed the Fenton gig due to my slack ex (bless her). A old flatmate of mine used to work in That Picture Shop in the Merrion Centre, and, being one of the Leeds 6 girls, was given advance warning of the show (on the afternoon of the gig). Not knowing my new phone no., but knowing I'd likely be quite 'giddy' about the whole thing, she rung my ex and left a message on her answermachine. My ex listened to the message the day after, THEN phoned me to let me know what I'd missed.

Now that's cruel. But so is life.

Heard they'd played Joseph's Well at the Manc Apollo gig, a week or so later.

Inexplicably, couldn't be bothered getting tkts for York, which were advertised in plenty of time on the official site. But I WAS at Leeds the following night, and that kicked red ass. :D

All's well...
