SoM Longbox CDs

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. I've got Floodland in a longbox. No idea where it's from, but it's an elektra product if I'm not very much mistaking. Bought in Sweden. There was a time when every cd came in a longbox along with the regular packing. Not sure why. There wasn't anything special with them, the cd was the same, no extra material, the box was too big to fit the cd collection and too small to fit the vinyls. Then they stopped making them.

Nope, but if there ever was a version on CD with the 'proper'/original mixes (see threads passim) this is the one. First Issue US CD, released a while before the UK first issue or any latter remastering disasters...

Howvere I think I asked before and somebody said it had the Jap mixes on it.... Oh well.

As Mr Lantern so accurately describes, they tended to be a rather futile excerise. Contents-wise they brought nothing new to the party, whilst on the front packaging then come in unwieldy boxes that don't fit anywhere in your collection, and get damaged the second you remove the shrinkwrap.

Wasn't the idea behind them at one point to make nicking CD's out of the shop more difficult? Futile attempt of course.

Well, yes, but then the record shop owners started to complain that they had to get deeper trays in their shops. Then various rock stars (incl Mr. Paul Hewson of course) started to go on about the fact that it wasn't good for the enviroment. They only kept on doing them in Japan for while I think where you get advertising added to it.

Did they have longboxes in Japan? I think you are referring to the 3" CD snapcases (?) ...

Anyway the CD's of the long boxes don't offer any extra material or different mixes, so there's only the "cosmetic" appeal of the long box itself, especially the FALAA which has the 4 'red background' pictures at the back as 1st used on the Elektra/Warner Canada LP release ...

Yep, false. The cd's are the regular releases, just the cover (ie. the box) is different. I didn't read all previous posts re the longbox releases, but they're US releases only and seem to be a particular marketing instrument in the US as far as I know.

The point was to avoid having to build/buy new display stands as the boxes were the same height as a vinyl LP and jewel cases aren't. The fact that they were more difficult to shoplift was an added bonus.
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.
